Hey guys, I just bought a 2001 Type R, only came with Cold Air Intake and 2.5" Magnaflow Cat-Back Exhaust, so its still basically stock. I've been doing research on the internet and talking to some friends about turbocharging the engine and have gotten some mixed advice on the matter. Some people say that the B18C5's compression is too high and to just build up my motor N/A, but others say that it would be fine to turbocharge if i keep the boost low, around 7 psi. What is your guys opinion on the matter?
Also, what upgrades should I do to my car, its basically stock except for the mods I previously mentioned and I don't know where to start. I should also let you guys know that this is only my second car and I have never done any work to cars but am willing to learn and dedicate alot of time to my Type R so hit me with some knowledge!
Very touchy subject in my opinion as everyones preference and knowledge backgrounds are different. For me personally and my views I personally am very much against turbos. For hondas the safe boost is 6 but everyone that ive met that has attempted to boost their honda/acura has blown their motor. Not saying u would but people who keep their motors w/ turbo usually build it to handle mid lvl boost for the safety of the motor and keep boost low. However there is probably some people on this site that will disagree and tell u how they boosted their R. A few things to consider is, 1. Do u have the money to maintain the car when the boost puts more wear on it. 2. Why do YOU want boost, more fun factor? Doing drag? 3. How long do u want the car/motor to last u since boosting can lower its lifespan. 4. Do u have good resources (shops, friends, local help) to take on any surprise projects since u did say ur mechanical experience is limited if im correct.
Aside from all that its really up to u buddy. If u aspire to have a turbo R than be the one to do it and enjoy life with it that much more. My biased opinion would be DONT DO IT. but i love my R, shes been a pain in the arse when it came to buying and fixing her. But the way it see it is i got a rare car/motor and want it to be in my life as long as possible and wouldnt do anything to it to make her go away.
As for the type of mods, its really up to u and ur budget. Some people like stock, some like jdm, spoon, mugen, etc. I personnaly like focusing on the main three, air, spark, fuel. But above all maintenance and how well the part will stand the test the time and if the part can potentially damage the motor.

I want to boost my car to get more horsepower out of it with less money, since to my knowledge building up the motor N\A would cost more to achieve the same amount of horsepower you could get building a Turbo engine. I would definitely build up my motor to handle the boost and I want to take every precaution I can to make sure nothing happens to my engine because I know how rare it is. My mechanic who works on my car has an Integra himself (GSR though) which is boosted and he has been invaluable help to me so far. He told me I could run ~5 psi with stock internals without having to tune it but I want to be safe so thats why I'm asking on here. Thanks for the reply I've been waiting anxiously for a while. I am going to wait until next spring to turbo it but would still like to gather as much information as I can before then. So what kind of things should I get for my engine to prepare it to run a decent amount of boost?
Change the head gasket jus in case so u know its "Newer" and theres alot of different type out, some possible for boost. You should strengthen the head; springs, retainers, valves, etc just so u wont have a firing problem. Port match. Intake and Exhaust the right size for turbo to prevent restrictions in airflow. I have never turbod any of my cars so take what i say with grain of salt. Maybe u should post specifically about mods to prepare for turbo. And try to ask for someone that currently has a turbo r. Ive seen a few in the ITRCA track meets. Good luck
