Accelerating Rev Problem
I have a 2000 ITR with just under 50K miles that I have 99% of maintenance done at the local Acura Dealership. The last few days the car has been acting a funny. When i'm in the correct gear, driving at a constant speed and when I step on the gas the car Revs up an extra 2000RPM before the car begins to accelerate. It is basically lagging when I hit the gas, its similar to being in the wrong gear and trying to accelerate (i.e. going 30MPH in 4th gear and stepping on the gas), but it happens when I'm in the correct gear. It has happened when I'm in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear. I'm taking it in to the Acura dealership next Tuesday. Anybody experience this before or have heard of something similar. Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated.

Your clutch is slipping.

Re: Accelerating Rev Problem
Wow.
When we took my OEM clutch out at something like 70K miles, it still had life in it.
It sounds like yours might have gone quite a bit sooner.
Any other ideas, guys?

I doubt you abuse your clutch though.George Knighton wrote:When we took my OEM clutch out at something like 70K miles, it still had life in it.

I can get a little rough on the people, though.Reid wrote:I doubt you abuse your clutch though.
Re: Accelerating Rev Problem
My first inclination was to say his clutch was slipping, but then I saw the mileage and figured I'd let one of you blokes answer it.
Is it possible it could be a problem with the differential as well, guys? I don't know much about limited slip differentials, unfortunately.

Re: Accelerating Rev Problem
The ITR Torsen axle can handle at lot more than 200 crank HP.
Unless he's been doing some serious abusing, somehow, I kind of doubt it.

Re: Accelerating Rev Problem
Engaging first gear in my car, sometimes I have that 'over rev' thing that was explained in the first post. It rarely happens, and didn't happen until after my 3 track events in 8 days. I only have 32,000, and the clutch is rock solid everywhere else except 5% of the time engaging 1st gear from a stop, so I'm not concerned at all yet. But, what you described sounds common for a slipping clutch.George Knighton wrote:The ITR Torsen axle can handle at lot more than 200 crank HP.

Re: Accelerating Rev Problem
Thanks for the info, I don't abuse my clutch very often its very rare that I will. I never took the car to the track or qtr, but the person I bought it from, it had only 13,000 miles on it, took it a few times. The clutch is not under any type of warranty is it? If it's going out at under 50K with rarely any abuse, and others are getting up to 70K with somewhat similar abuse, is my clutch going out sooner than most others? What is the cost to replace the clutch, stock, from the dealer and from other shops. The Acura Dealership quoted me $800. I might see how much the Honda dealerships will charge. Is there anything you guys feel I should look out for or be cautious with when I have my clutch changed? Thanks again for the info, and this licks balls if I need to change the clutch out because I just bought a house to put my R in.

Re: Accelerating Rev Problem
tell acura to go fuck themselves
get a good stage 1 clutch of any after market brand (excedy, Clutchmaster, ACT) and get it installed at some local shop for half their price quote.

Wait just under 50k miles its still on warranty, right? Anyway I would have them do it for free. If they give you a hard time ask them for the manager...if he's on that BS too...ask him for there 1 800 customer service number and ask him his dealership number...that always gets them worried. Make sure to ask him for his whole name. Make a complaint I bet you'll get a call back with a sorry please bring your car in within a week or so. Good luck. If they hook you up then cool but if not I love my ACT clutch...

A clutch wearing out is not a warranty issue.Erik B wrote:Wait just under 50k miles its still on warranty, right? Anyway I would have them do it for free.

Re: Accelerating Rev Problem
Acura will, at times, cover a clutch if there are no signs of abuse and it is failing becuase of broken springs, which does not seem to be the case here. So, in this case, I doubt acura will cover it.Reid wrote:A clutch wearing out is not a warranty issue.

Re: Accelerating Rev Problem
Let's face it. You never know what a dealer's gonna do.
One service manager will do it, the next one will not.

My stock tires wore out in under 6000 miles.
Would you consider that a warranty issue?

Re: Accelerating Rev Problem
Well, yeah your gas runs out too...that's not something going bad. His clutch shouldn't go bad that soon if it does I'm sure most dealers will fix it. Specially if his car is dam near stock

Sounds like a Clutch problem and I'd think that before the LSD...
If a clutch is bad after only 50k then there is some reason why.
Driver? Does the driver ride the clutch or use the clutch to slow the car all the time?
Faulty Master Cylinder? My sister had a Saturn and the clutch would always slip on the FW even if it were fully engaged. Found out that there was some problem with the master cylinder.
Just a thought. Have them check the entire system and if ther problem is with the Master Cylinder or something related then there is no question that Acura should fix the system and replace the worn disk as well.
