Droid appears to be hurting Microsoft and Palm mobile phones. RIM, Apple, and Google are all gaining market share over the last quarter.

Q4 2009 Market share
RIM - 41.3%
Apple - 24.8%
Microsoft 19.7%
Palm 7.8%
Google 2.8%

Q1 2010 Market share - Gain/Loss
RIM - 43% - + 1.7%
Apple - 25.1% - + 0.3%
Microsoft - 15.7% - -4.0%
Palm - 5.7% - -2.1%
Google - 7.1% - +4.3%

The astonishing number is that Apple has 25% of the entire smart phone market share with only 3 phones ever released and is still gaining market share. I'm curious to see what the numbers look like when the iPhone 4 comes out with the pre-order sales topping 600,000 units the first day (10x that of the iPhone 3GS). Also, the Incredible has a one month back order right now but I'm not sure of the total unit sales.

My next phone will be running a Droid OS.

Iphones have been out how long now?

Android based phones how long?

If we were to graph them, I wonder how long it would be that Android based phones cross over Apple based phones in the market.

That and the fact that Iphone phones HAVE to be on ATT's network currently.

If anything that makes their sales that much more impressive. It'll take the Droid's awhile to catch up, but they will and both will be pretty close to even IMO.

<--not a fanboy of either, but loves his iPhone and likes the droids as well. The ones I've messed with so far seemed relatively unstable though.

The original iPhone sold 6.1 million phones in 5 quarters. All Android based phones combined sold 8.4 million phones in the first 5 quarters.

Again, I'll be buying an Android based phone but it didn't revolutionize the market like the iPhone did.

You can unlock them and use them on T-Mobile. I have a few friends who have done that.

You can't compare Android market share and iPhone market share because there's 3 iPhones, and how many different Android phones?

Right now the biggest thing I like about my company BlackBerry is the fact that battery lasts FOREVER. It doesn't seem possible to kill the battery in a single day, even with support calls lasting for hours and hours. It's not the coolest phone out, but always seems to have signal and battery life.

The only thing I use my iPhone for business-wise is company e-mail and I don't use that enough to drain the battery. I have a friend that even on his blackberry he is going through 2 batteries a day for work use. With an iPhone he was dead before noon.

Agree'd, Apple beat them to the punch... but I think because of Androids "Open source" structure it will eventually take over quite a bit.

I think the Android will be the main choice of those in the "nerd" market, but for the majority of people, the iPhone fits what they want. I like the idea of the 'open source' type of OS the Android has but I wouldn't take advantage of it, and I think most consumers fit into the same group as me.

BTW, I'm an iphone user but I'm not a fanboy. I love my phone, but if it weren't for all the money I have in it, I'd probably have gotten something else last time I upgraded. I've spent a lot on apps and videos, and the ease of just plugging in my new phone and EVERYTHING from my old phone is transferred is nice. I have all my texts, pictures, apps and everything else that I've had since I got my first iPhone 2.5 years ago. I know with any phone I could have transferred pictures and contacts, but everything else I would have lost. I've played around with other phones and have liked them, but I feel kinda attached to my iPhone and not in a bad way.

You can do that with any phone out there.

And why can't you? Nobody told Apple how to make, and market their phones? Android/Google did a better/wiser job IMO.

You're comparing an OS thats on 3 different carriers in more than a dozen different phones to 3 phones on one carrier. Android SHOULD have a bigger market share and more users.

Not given the time on the market, but I do believe it will get there.

Again, Apple and Google marketed their approach differently. Can't blame either for that. Is what it is.

Well going from $122 per share from the release of the iPhone to a current $273 share price with a major financial meltdown in the middle I'd say Apple has done something correct, even if they offer root access or not :)

I think once it's opened to other carriers you'll see the opposite. Either way my crystal ball is just as cloudy as yours, I think it's still going to continue to do well.

<- can't wait for the day Apple opens up the market to other carriers. Part of it is Verizon's fault for using a format that the rest of the world does not use. In terms of business management, GSM is the right choice. From AT&T's perspective I would do everything I could to lock in that exclusive contract. Verizon > AT&T.

OMFG. I wish I had a video camera. Walking out of my office bldg today there was a guy on his IPhone doing the whole "can you hear me, can you hear me now." The classic part was that I was on my phone talking just fine as I walked past him. Go verizon! hahaha
