ITRs versus Sportbikes

Post by MINTY FRESH »

Hello One and All

Over the last month or so I have finally been able to get the old VF out of the garage and drive it. My particular motorcycle is a modified version of the 1985 VF1000F (a picture of it is posted in the ITR registry). Call me an old fuddy, but having a bike that is top heavy is kind of fun. Really keeps you awake. Anyway, I bring this to the group's attention because there have been many times on this forum and on others where the ITR is compared to a motorbike, specifically, to the sport bike or crotch rockets. Having driven both, I would have to agree to a point. While both are raw, the flavour is different. First, the handling on the ITR is much better. Since I have also driven other motorcycles other than my 85, I find almost all of the sportbikes require you to brake too early so that the driver can control the angle of the bike , whereas with the ITR (LSD) you can carry much more speed into the corner. Second, the ITR is much more relaxing. I do agree that the ITR is alittle loud in comparison to other cars, but unless you have driven a sport bike in anger (or insanity), the ITR almost seems to be a luxury car. Lastly, the speed. Ah yes, this is where there is no comparison. While the ITR is a better handler and quieter, there is nothing like a 10 second quarter mile. But again, that is not the point of an ITR. The ITR was designed for lateral dynamics and not for snapping your head back.

These are just my thoughts. Anybody else who has partaked of sportbikes and the ITR think the same or different?

Thanks.

WTF are you smoking? Are you really comparing a sports bike to the ITR?

Hello Len

I was comparing their character, Len, not the raw statistics. The VF1000F is a sportbike built by Honda in the mid 80s. When I wrote my post I had just driven the VF and it reminded me of the way my 97R felt. Both are purpose-built and don't come into their power until higher revs and when they do, the vehicles (be it motorcycle or car) soul ( if I can use the term) comes sharper into focus. As my review stated, there was absolutely no comparison in speed, but there was in cornering and lateral dynamics. As for a comparison with a motorcycle, when the ITR came out, many reviewers did say that the ITR was like a four-wheel sportbike. By the the way, Len, do you have a sportbike as well as a ITR? And if you do, do you think they are similar in their character??

Thanks for your comment

Sincerely,

MINTY FRESH

my bad. nope. i have no car or bike. i ride marta, public train. =(

But I must say, it feels pretty raw for me when the train goes around corners. there's absolutely no suspension and it turns like it's on rails. no body roll, no bumps, and there's absolutely no deceleration in speed. It's like magic on crack cocaine with curt cobain driving it. It even smells raw, like raw piss and ass. Pretty disgusting when I think about it, but ultimately the rawest experience I've ever had, asides from having unprotected anal sex, that's pretty raw too.

Hello

Yes, indeed. Actually, I don't know how to respond to such a post.

Len rails daily. No one understands "raw" better than him.
