clicking/ticking coming from motor
clicking/ticking coming from motor
Hi, I got my Integra Type-R in 2004 and it was two years old with 32,000 miles on it. The only thing that was done was a AEM cold air intake with k&n air filter. Now 6 years later it still runs great with no major problems but I just hit 183,000 miles and Im starting to here a clicking/ticking coming from the motor under a load and it doesnt sound good. It idols fine with no noise and the clicking/ticking sound is inconsistent at low rpms and fast ticks after v-tech. I have faithfully changed the oil every 3'000 with moble one full synthetec and kept up with all normal wear an tear. Can anyone help me please !!!

This.....and have you had any accidental over-revving of the motor? Like downshifting into 2nd gear when you meant to go to 4th.turbohf wrote:when was your last valve adjustment?

Thanks for the reply. I have a black one I was trying to post some pics of it last night but cant figure it out the size of my pic is to large to post an I dont know how to down size the pic. I had the valves adjusted about 20,000 miles ago for the first time. I have a friend that is a mechanic that does some of the more involved work and he says the noise sounds like its coming from the valve train but wasnt sure so I was doin a littel research. I dont know what i would do without my R its been a daily driver for six years. oh and I have over reved it pretty bad twice the throttel body got stuck open and i was racing a friends fourwheeler that was very loud and didnt notice I was hitting the rev limiter. (Burnt valve maybe?)

If there is a burnt valve it would be more than likely have a miss at idle and through the powerband. I had a similar noise come from my old B16 swapped hatch. It turned out that the lost motion assemblies were bad. I dont really know how to explain what they look like.
They are the piece that keeps the rocker arm assembly for the vtec lobe of the camshaft up when vtec is not engaged.
They are #18 in the picture.
And fyi... they are like 35 bucks a piece. I did it the cheap way on my B16 and bought the ones for a prelude that are just springs, but they need to be shimmed.

Re: clicking/ticking coming from motor
i HIGHLY doubt its the LMA... i have taken apart a lot of BVTEC heads and can tell you that SiR and SiR-II heads are really the ones that make noise. pretty much all the OBD2 heads seem to have way nicer LMA and dont bind. i think i have some pictures. but basically the ones that are tappered to a small point (like 4mm pad) are the shit ones. the LMA that are vertical up to like a 8mm pad are the good ones, havent noticed any of those that bind or dont have full motion.
burnt valve really doesnt make a ticking noise.
BENT valve will make a ticking noise forsure.
bouncing the revlimiter really shouldnt do anything that bad (unless its at like 10k lol). downshifting from the revlimiter in 3rd into 2nd will fuck shit up.

Re: clicking/ticking coming from motor
ok visual for you guys for future i guess.
far left ones are CRAP. pretty sure every set of those i have pulled have had more than 1 that bound, was sticky, didnt have full range of motion. you find these in 89-95ish SiR/B16A heads. pretty sure the set pictured EVERY one of them was binding before full compression. and threw them away right after i took those pics.
dont remember which is which on the rest cuz well they all look the same lol. BUT there is a 99-00 Si, 99 B18C1, and a 00 B18C5 sets of LMA there. didnt have proper stuff to measure total lift on these. but i dont think i have seen a single one like those that have been questionable.
