50 dollar intake
Finally I got fed up with the stock intake and decided to fab something up. I may still end up with a mugen in the long run, but the 500+ price tag just irritates me more than anything.
After crunching some numbers, this flat style filter has about 70% more surface area then the k&n cone filter I was running in the stock box. And of course no ABS with this box.

Thoughts suggestions?

Wow, that is some impressive engineering Dan. Do you have any plans to direct airflow to the box's inlet?

Very nice Dan! how well does that foil thing seal to this box? I'd be somewhat concerned about it blocking that velocity stack a bit, but I can't tell how close it actually gets in there a bit. I had planned on building something similar years ago, but never got around to it.
Reminds me a bit of the one Endyn made years ago for their big power SC'd R.

Thanks ryan, this is 2nd version I've come up. Ever since I saw my first velocity stack years ago, I've always thought about a flat style filter, with no restrictions around the stack. My first version was made out of fiberglass. I didn't like the fitment or the look:coolhandluke wrote:Wow, that is some impressive engineering Dan. I've thought about direct airflow. I had initial plans to make a bend and pull air in from the fender. However my passenger side brake cooler runs right through that area. I may end up pulling something from the headlight, but I really don't want to take the headlights out. So for now, this is what I'm working with.

Re: 50 dollar intake
The top piece is made out of styrofoam, to made to fit the contour of the roof, and the box. Then wrapped dynomat over the foam. The styro piece was made to be a little bit larger so when the hood closed I had to put ass all over over the hood, to make a good indentation into the styro to create a lip. Over all its about 95% air tight. This was that hardest part of the project. And why I still may end up making a cap for the box out of steel.Erik95LS wrote:Very nice Dan! how well does that foil thing seal to this box? However, I think I will end up making a new box again, where the sides go all the way to the roof and follow the contour, and seal with no styro and to make the box larger.
Right now the v-stack, has no contact with any surface, however its very close at the top.

Re: 50 dollar intake
Now that I think about it, this has to be similar to the thought process that RTR was using when they used an NSX air box.

Re: 50 dollar intake
What sold me on the intake before I even started was when I did the numbers. To get the best surface area number, I decided to measure the actual screen surface.
My stock k&n filter :
Fin size: 5 7/8 * 1/2 * 1/8
47 Fins on filter
Use two equations, First equation is for the surface area of the side of the fin, and the second for the top of the fin. I multiple the ending number by 2 because there is two screens on both sides of 1 fin
1/8*5 7/8*47*2=69.03125
1/2*5 7/8*47*2=276.125
Total 345.15625 in^2
K&N flat filter
Fin size: 12 * 1 1/2 * 1/4
26 fins on filter
1/4*12*26*2=156
1 1/2*12*26*2=936
Total 1092 in^2

Re: 50 dollar intake
very cool, Im sure that after a little tweaking it will be awesome, the RTR guys probably had the same concept, its all about sealing off the filter from the engine heat and having a large volume of air available for that first punch of the throttle.....
