Expo related: VA and radar detectors
I remember hearing there are illegal in VA. Any truth to this?
Thanks.
Matt- who can't wait for the expo even if he has to drive near the speed limit while there
Thanks.

Radar detectors are not allowed in the Dominion.
I don't think they're confiscated on sight anymore, but it's a whopping extra ticket if you get caught w/one.
On the other hand, speed limits are enforced with a degree of common sense.
If you're driving over 80 in a 65, you will get a ticket. If you're driving 73 in a 65, it's very unlikely you'll get a ticket.

correct.. they let me keep mine(although they made me get out and put it in the hatch cargo area).. nice $80 ticket too..George Knighton wrote:CW_97_ITR wrote:I remember hearing there are illegal in VA. Any truth to this?

But yes, you can speed within reason..

It should be pointed out that anything over 80mph gets a wreckless driving ticket. Don't expect to pay fine on the spot and go on your merry way... wreckless ticket = court appearance.George Knighton wrote: If you're driving over 80 in a 65, you will get a ticket. heh i got a ticket in January of '03 going 93 in a 55 and got busted. The cop just gave me a ticket and told me to slow down. and asked me y i was going so fast. He probably could have arrested me but the worst part was i couldn't take defensive driving and had to pay the ticket which went on my record as over 25 over the limit and increased my insurance i think 30% for the next 3 years.
Would anyone know how to lower this by anychance? anything i could do to drop my rate a little?

Sure a plane is fast but you can't chirp second in a plane!

My advice: just dont use it. Keep it unplugged. You have to keep in mind that Virginia uses radar detector detectors. Many redar detectors can get around the VG-2 Radar detector detector, but there is a new one they use called Spectre-II which they cannot get around. Spectre-II is able to detect virtually all radar detectors. Just use your head-- as long as its turned on, they can still get your for the detector even if you arent speeding.
Now? No. Too bad you didn't try to get out of it (or get the charges reduced) in court, when the case was being heard...40calpal wrote:heh i got a ticket in January of '03 going 93 in a 55 and got busted. Could u use it until u got some radar signals and then turn it off? or will u'r radar even detect one of those radar radar detectors.mythias wrote:My advice: just dont use it. Keep it unplugged. Meaning what? If he catches you doing 80 in a 55, he's going to give you a ticket for 90 if he sees a radar detector?revolution8k wrote:Well, I should have said it also depends on the cop and his mood at that moment in time. if he see's you speeding in 30 degree rainy weather, he's probably going to be more pissed off and might just give you a bigger ticket because of it.
Granted, cops don't like detectors, and you might be more likely to get out of a ticket if they don't see one - but even if they see one, they're not going to "give you a bigger ticket because of it".
revolution8k wrote:Radar detectors are illegal in VA and Washington DC. Every other state they're legal....
revolution8k is correct. In the United States, the use of radar detectors in cars is illegal only in Virginia and D.C. Click here for a reference. They are legal in the rest of the United States, although you are correct that they are also illegal in Canada.Opie wrote:Not true, they are illegal in quite a few states and all of Canada I believe also.
At one time, they were illegal in Connecticut, but that law was repealed in the mid to late nineties.

No to the first statement...but he might pursue your court case aggressively, and show up to testify. Might give testimony of reckless driving, etc...putting you in more of a world of hurt. There are asshole cops out there, and some are worse when you piss them off more.nsxtasy wrote:Meaning what? I once got pulled over flying down a moderately busy road near my home at around midnight and as i was turning off onto my side street a cop flashed his lights and pulled me over. I didn't see him and my radar detector didn't pick up anything. I was in a bad mood and acted beligerant when he said, "I clocked u going 90 down this road" so i said "Whatever my car can't even handle that (hheheh ) plus u didn't clock me" and he saw i had a radar detector and then said "Well i had to go 100 to catch up to u" so he saw my license and registration and said "Lets try to slow it down" and i got off with a warning!! I think Radar detectors are helpful especially if a cop see's u have one that way they can't lie about clocking u at xxx speed.

I would tend to argue about that.Chris N wrote:Why is it that VA is particularly harsh (more so than other states) on speeding and radar?
I hate to say this, but I'll occasionally call someone to see where the radar is set if I'm in a hurry. Very often, the answer on the safer Interstates is 80!
In other words, they're not even going to pull out after you unless you trip the alarm because you're going over 80.
I have never found that Virginia was especially harsh on speeding, and I have frankly been astonished at the number of tickets I hear about.
It seems to me that they could be a lot tougher than they really are.
Prohibiting radar detectors doesn't mean that they are harsher on speeding than elsewhere. I don't know if Chris really intended to say this because he actually has heard something about their enforcement, or if it was just an unfortunate choice of words when asking about why Virginia prohibits radar detectors.
Some states are harsher on speeding than others, though. I travel extensively around the Midwest, and from what I've seen, Indiana is harsher than elsewhere, and Michigan is more lenient than elsewhere. Places that are harsh will pull people over for as little as 10 mph over the limit or less, while places that are lenient will let people drive 20 mph over with relative impunity. Of course, this is all just a matter of general impressions; if you're the one motorist who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, you can get caught anywhere at any illegal speed.
