Type R Block...How Much Boost is SAFE!
I just purchased a 01 Type R and I have $4000 extra to put into it...at first I was going to go with Tein RA's and Mugen MF10's (the car came with an AEM CAI and DC 4-1 headers) but then I found that a REV Hard Turbo Kit goes for about $3300 my only thing is this is my only car and I don't want to take the chance of blowning the engine especially since the motor is not built properly for turbo. With completely stock internals except maybe a block guard how much boost is safe to run on b18c5? 7psi? And how much WHP do you see this set up making? Thanks Guys.

stock block
the kit is only 3300, but don't forget engine management. I paid $3900 for my RevHard back in 2001 and ran since then with shitty tuning (FMU or VAFC) and was miserable (except at the dragstrip.. )
I made 295whp at 8500 on a mustang dyno once I was Hondata tuned at about 10-11 Psig.
Erik on this board made 306whp (not sure what kind of dyno) at I believe 10Psig Hondata tuned...
What do we have in common...?
tuning.
And both of our cars are alive and well, so you can expect this type of numbers if you have common sense and don't kill the motor with too much boost, too much timing advance, or not enough (or too much) fuel..

Before we start a motor doesn't know it's being boosted so there is no way to tell a limit of boost. All it knows is that it is being made work allot harder therefore putting allot more stress on parts within the block. I don't think 1 person could tell you what the max boost you could run before you blow your motor is going to be. Tuning is something that needs to be added to that factor.....ok.
without a doubt 4gs aint enough but it'll get you started. You can run low boost (5psi) on a shitty FMU setup and make nice numbers. I was running 5psi making 254whp for about 5 month. With that 4g's you can do close to that if not the same. Only difference would be I was (still am) running a custom kit with the Rev Hard cast iron mani. and tuning. Don't forget you have to pay to get it put in if you don't know what your doing. Is shipping included on that price. What I'm getting at is if your on a 4g budget don't cut it to close to that because they'll be a few other things you'll need that you never hear of till it's time to put everything in. I had my car tuned to run as good as possible at 5psi. It was good enough for what I had but I wanted more power. If I was going to run a "kit" it would be the RevHard though without a doubt. Let us know if you need anymore help or have any questions.

4Gs will get you a great turbo kit, but no engine management....

Yeap if your lucky. You could always do the full race kit and get a hondata for around 4g's. But then you have to get it tuned.

do what I did. get a inline pro head gasket and block guard. pick up a AFC, 450cc injectors, fuel pump, fmu, and missing link. get it tuned. import parts has a new deal that you build your own kit online and only by the parts you want/need.
if you want to go all motor and have good power:
11.5:1 comp pistons
eagle rods
sleeve the motor
a good valve train and Toda spec c's and that should put you at about 4500 bucks or so depending on where you buy your parts. of course you will still need enginemanagment, but you can make 200whp all motor on a AFC pretty easy. on the other hand I know you can make 400whp on a AFC, fmu, and 450cc injectors without ever touching the sleeves, pistons, or rods. it is your call

what about driving the car every day. how long would the motor last. I really wanted to boost my ITR i allmost bought a JRSC but got talked out of it. My shop said it wasn't practicle if i wanted to drive the car every day. I'd trust your guys expierence would this work with tuneing
http://www.jacksonracing.com/Shop/ViewP ... exID=38961 It would seem to be a complete kit and maybe reliable. And how many miles has any of you put on your stock block boosted type-r's.

reliability
My car has only 48000 miles, but has been turboed since 14000.
It runs perfect, just like new.
I maintain my car meticulously, in fact I've changed my trans fluid about 6 or 7 times already, etc.
It's impossible to tell you how long your engine will last boosted, it really depends on how badly out of tune it is and how hard it is abused. If you treat it with respect, maintain it, have it properly tuned and don't hit it with too much boost, it will last longer than you might think.
