Hey Aj...i need ur opinion

Post by TypeRPaul »

Well u helped all of us with the old forum and this is open to anyone but i wanted to make sure u read this....i know you have answered this question about a million times but i want your opinion on what i should do next.....i have intake and exaust i want to get header but i have heard amazing things about hytech but 1300 on a student budget hits pretty hard so what would you suggest my next step be to build a all-motor monster but streetable to some point...here is what i have planned:
-skunk2 valve train, minuse valves(use stock ones)
-change pistons(not sure which ones...but want to stay at 91 oct gas, damn CA)
-skunk2 cam gears
-skunk2 stage 2 cams
-hytech header
-extrude hone tb and intake man

this is all i can think of for now but looking at that type of setup what would you say i do next....i was thinkin V-afc but i read that other post about it and the fuil rail so im a little lost and not modding my r every couple of months gets boring...anyways, im sorry so long just seein if u could help a newbie out :D thanks man

I know You did not ask for my advise, But ...

-skunk2 valve train, minuse valves(use stock ones)
Have you concidered TODA or JUN?
-change pistons(not sure which ones...but want to stay at 91 oct gas, damn CA)
Are you sure you want to go into the bottom end? if so what about CTR pistons?
-hytech header
If your concerned about the money Try a OEM JDM 4-1, I see they make nice power and only cost $400. Or a TODA Header for $900 which falls in the middle.
-extrude hone tb and intake man
As for the TB, most will say to leave it alone, as for the Manifold, plenty of choices if looking to buy, But with the parts you listed: keep it stock.

Just my .02 cents...

Hmmmm.... Questions....

Well, the stuff you listed sounds pretty good, if I were to go into the bottom end, I would just switch for some nice forged 12:1 pistons, and you really don't need rods, and as far as the valve train goes, all you need are valve springs, retainers, cams and cam gears.

I would recomend use of Skunk2 stuff, becuase not only is it the cheapest, but after talking to a lot of people, their retainers also have better fitment then both Jun and Toda, and concerning their valve springs the Jun are said to be too stiff, often causing backlash, which made the cams crack, and as far as the Toda stuff, it's just too much money, and not enough difference. The Skunk2 stage2 cams are good cams, thats what I run, and have been happy with them, you may also want to look into Jun Type-3 or Toda Spec-C if you can get them cheaply enough. As far as cam gears go, anything with 5 or more bolts is fine, just don't buy crap, in otherwords go with a brand you've heard of.

As far as bottom end goes, you'll need to get higher compression to maximize the power you get out of cams, the larger the lift, the more compression is required to push the cams. I would suggest going with either Endyn Roller Wave pistons, which is what I use, which are actually machined Wisco pistons for less detonation at high compressions, or just a set of JE pistons. Either way on 91 octane, I don't think you'll want to go any higher then like 12.3:1 compression. Thankfully I live in FL where we have 93, so I run 12.8:1, which is pushing it, even for 93.

In regards to headers, I love the Hytech header, it makes gobs of power, but you are absolutely right, much like you I can't afford to buy a 1300 dollar header, or at least would have better use for the money. I would go with the DC sports JDM 4-1, it performs just as well as most other headers, and even features the 2.5 inch collector, and it's far less then most of the competition. The only problem I see with the 98 spec OEM JDM 4-1 Type-R header, is that it's cast, and they tend to rust very quickly.

Extruding the intake manifold and TB will give you very little horse power, the only thing it really accomplishes is to smooth out the surface of teh manifold, but for like 650 bucks, you could go and buy the JG victor X manifold and TB, which will give you more hp and way.

In any case, I'm gonna be late for class, gotta run.

Later,

Aj
