you are correct. Shutter speed varies infinitely with conditions, but I wouldn't really go much under 1/100 or so Thats called panning when you track the subject like that.

IIRC he does and I know I do. Now I need a polorized filter for those hot sunny FL days on track.

Yes yes, panning or following your subject... :P

IIRC Alexander suggested 1/250 for on track with a clear car and blurred background so that the picture shows speed. All of the pics from Sunday don't show speed at all.

You can only make my car look so good. Erik might bring out too many of the imperfections!!
True, but that I don't care about. Erik, which would be easier to shoot outside on a sunny day.... A black R with all the shiny-ness and reflection, or a yellow car that seems to blend in as far as color? Just curious so I can look at different color cars and shoot appropriately.
Black cars are always hard to shoot properly. Conditions like in Jim's pics above are about perfect for them, but they aren't that hard to shoot in moderate sunlight. Yellow cars are easy to shoot as long as they're the only color subject in the frame.

What about yellow, with grass on the sides of the track?

This isn't a great example, but this is one I had handy. This was at 1/160th and f16. Its very mildly blurred although since I had it at f16 it was hard to get the car very sharp which I didn't really do, but you get the idea.

This much older picture also happened to be at 1/160th, but f7.1 this time. Different camera too. Even thought I was shooting through the fence this one came out far better.

I think you forget the beetle pic on the pencil tree. IMO that came out pretty good.

Here are a couple better examples.

My favorite picture I've ever taken. 1/160th f7.1 again (wierd) 71mm ISO 100
Image

1/200th f8 at 59mm and ISO 100
Image

Hope these give you some ideas. Jim be careful out there if you actually are doing that. Its a good way to practice, but cops have started fucking with photographers alot over the past year or so.
