Volk CE28N, Racing Hart CP-035
Hey, I'm thinking about getting some light racing rims for my ITR. I wanted to know if anyone out there is running on Volk's CE28N or Racing Hart CP-035. I like the look of the Racing Harts, but the Volks are so light. 16x7.5 is like 11 lbs I think. Seems like that's pushing it, but I'm willing to give them a try. If there are any other good light weight wheels anyone is running that they recommend let me know. Rims are a big deal to me and I would like to get the right ones (looking at 16x7.5") for best performance. Thanks!

Not exactly. You'd slow yourself down by the additional rotational mass of a 17" rim. I'd recommend sticking with the stock 15" size or not higher than 16" aftermarket.Multra Corakus wrote:Thanks, I'll look into it. I like 16" because their lighter, but 17" would offer more traction... still debating...

Not to step on any tows, but after testing the theory my self, I'm pretty sure, I'm right on this one...a 17" rim with tire, does not have a larger mass than a 16" rim with tire, unless you alter the rolling diameter which would set off your speedo any way, in fact, ussualy if not always, a 17" tire will weigh less than a 16" tire, as it's less rubber, and less side wall = less weight because of the steel belts, and the difference in tire weight far offsets the difference in the weight of one inch of alluminum/magnisium especially if you're talking about lite weight forged wheels, once again, this assumes that the external diameter of the tire stays the same. In addition, you got it backwards any way, less rim/more tire = more traction, the more sidewall flex you have, the more traction you get, or at least that's the case in a straight line, as far as on a road course, you do get a bit more by running it a tad larger rim, but you'd accomplish a lot more by going an inch wider instead of an inch larger.
On a side note, unfortunately, if you drive an R like I do, which has a 5x114.3 lug pattern, then you can't buy a 16" or 17" CP-035 in the US, as they don't make them in our lug pattern, just the polished 18" CP-035R, which I really didn't care for. If your willing to pay the shipping, Sprint Hart, which is the Japanese counterpart to Racing Hart, both owned by hart wheel company, makes the CP-035 in our lug pattern, which is what I did, I got the 17x7" in winning gold, which still weighs 2.5 lbs less than my stock wheels, and the tires(falken Azenis) weigh a good deal less than the stock 205-50-15. All in all I love them, as soon as I get a chance, I'll post some pics.
As far as volks go, they're sweet as hell, but I just couldn't justify the almost $600 dollar retail for one 16" CE28N, even for a set with tires if someone's cutting you a deal, you're still paying well over 2 G's. A little crazy for wheels....
Any way, good luck, let us know what you get....

Aj

With all things being equal, a wheel in a 16" size is going to have more rotational mass than the same wheel in a 17" size, as the largest, heaviest part of the wheel, the rim section, is going to be pushed farther outward.
The total weight of the wheel/tire combination could very well be the same due to the shorter sidewall on the tire (if overall wheel/tire diameter is to be kept) counteracting the larger size of the wheel.

Good follow-up post Rotaree, you had me scratching my head for a 2nd there
Aj, the only way you could have less rotational mass and rolling diameter is to run with rubber bands for tires... I don't think that the harsh ride and wheel hop, not to mention the gheyness that is rubber-band tires, is worth it.

I agree, very kool, but they don't make them in 5x114.3, or so I was told...jdm cw type r wrote:velox pg-5s 17 inch weighs 12.51 lbs they are very hot!!!!
And as far as rotating mass goes, you don't need to run on rubber bands, when it comes to light weight wheels, most of the time, the additional wheel diameter weighs less than the the tire weight removed, in other words, you get some, but lose more. I guess a good parallel would be a super charger, yes, you loose several horse power because of the parasitic drag on your pulleys, but you gain so much, it makes up for it. Same thing goes with wheels and tires. I guess it's not that great of an example, but it's the best way I can think to describe it. My point was, that yes the rims are heavier, but larger tires with the same rolling diameter and width, will ussualy, not always, but most of the time, way less to the point where it offsets the weight of the rims, if not surpassing that change in wheel weight.
Any way, I guess it really doesn't matter, if you're talking about what only amounts to a lb or two, even of sprung weight...

I have a set of OZ F-1 Cups, anthracite with yellow lettering, 16x7.5 with a 35mm offset for sale. They look pretty in the light or the dark . I had them on my R for 3 months. They've been garaged since. For the right money you can have the Toyo T-1S's they're wrapped in, 225/45r16.
I'm going to upgrade the suspension, and they'll present a clearance issue. If you're going to stay stock, no problem. Just roll the rear fenders.
