New Teg Owner???
New Teg Owner???
OK dudes. I just sold my 2 about 3 weeks ago and I need a new car. I just cant decide what itll be though. Im leaning towards either a Integra GSR, Eclipse GST/GSX, or maby another mr2. Im sure some of yall can help me with this. What would any of yall get( sure most of yall will say a teg, but whatever) which car do you guys thing is the best? Ive never driven an Integra before so I dont know what its like, actually I havent driven a front engine for a while now. Dont know if I'll ever even like front engine FWD's anymore. So used to the thrill of a midengine. Thanx.

Hands down, a GSR. It's very reliable of daily driving. The body and interior are drop dead gorgeous. And even with a front engine, it will be incredibly thrilling. With just a AEM CAI, you'll love the sound of the VTEC and Intake changeovers.

I think if you can get a type r get one over a gsr ,the diff is big. Anybody who is a car person and really loves to drive will love a type R its just that good. You may still perfer MR or FR but theres no Q about it you will see what the talk is about. I'd say do the reserch on the R and being in houston it shoudnt be to hard to find one for sale and test drive.
Thats just my 2cents

Sound? No, not like a turbo. Think Formula 1 motor but more subdued depending on intake/exhaust mods.
All about VTEC
It basically helps the engine harness low rpm torque (however much torque you can get from a 1.8L Honda ) and high rpm horsepower.

VTEC is a physical changeover inside the motor at a specified RPM. At that point the high-lift lobe takes over and pushes the valves deeper into the cylinder and for a longer period than before VTEC changeover. This allows the engine to breathe easier and therefor increase high RPM HP.
A turbo spooling up is much more variable in its boost output. Often, and others can correct me on this one, you can hear and even feel the VTEC changeover as a very distinct event, especially with a cold air intake or short ram intake. Now with a GSR, you also have the Intake Air Bypass changeover that helps with high end HP.
Best thing I can recommend is to take a test drive in one and hear/feel it yourself.
Here's a nice short clip of a Type R on a dyno and you can definitely hear the VTEC changeover when "VTEC" flashes on the screen.

As Doespike said, + Its techically electrically controlled and oil presure activated. You can set the RPM point at which it switches over to the high lobes, so it's not like the engine is waiting for it to "spool up". You can set it to activate at 1,000 RPMs if you you wish so... However if you set VTEC at a low RPM, you will loose power as it only creates power in the higher RPM range because of the high lobe cam profiles which are specifically designed to be used in the higher RPM spectrum. If you're wondering, you should adjust the VTEC crossover on a dyno, so you can see can see where it makes you more power. Typically, this is done when you upgrade your enginemr2 guy wrote:VTEC is like turbo in the sense that it takes time to "spool up" (lack of the right word) it turns on at a certain RPM? am
i right?
