going on reverse question?

Post by SerGTR »

Well it might sound weird but I remember somewhere I read about some trick of going onto 2nd or 3rd gear or something before putting to reverse, from what I remember it suppose to do good to synchros. Can someone please refresh my memory.

I found in most cars with manual trans is 1st to reverse seems to open the gates easier.
Or just wait a few seconds and then pull it in to reverse.

I used to go to first gear, then I read all you have to do is put it in neutral engage then disengage the clutch. Engage clutch put in reverse. If it doesn't want to go in smooth repeat. It has worked fine for me the past couple of years.

Thats what made me think about this is that whenever I put it in reverse it is kinda... "hard" or better worded not smooth so I just had that paranoia that something is not right here and I remembered that some one at ITRCA mention something about it. So what you saying is putting to neutral and working clutch should do as well going to first gear then rear, well I'll compare

Yes. I had this problem since I bought it new. I used to put into first then go back to reverse. I read some where, that when you put into nuetral, and let out on the clutch, it gets the input shaft rotating, which in turns gets the counter shaft turning. The gear turns enough for a smooth engagement into reverse. Also using Heal and toe or rev matching when down shifting is supposed to help out in extending tranny life. I do it about 50% of the time.
