Previous maintenance records
Title condition
compression/leakdown tests
do you have a garage
Mods or previous mods
run a carfax

Mostly what I would advise is be patient and be willing to travel. I picked up my second in Wisconsin and third in NY/CT. I'm from FL so I travelled quite a bit. The first one I got was local and not near as nice as those other 2. Get what YOU want and don't settle. If there are things you don't like about a certain car, discuss with the owner and negotiate. There are a lot of nice ITR's for sale at the moment. Pick and choose what YOU want as the buyer. Don't just settle for any old R out there.
