My thoughts on clutches... I guess.

Post by Bbasso »

There seems to be a strong coincidence between hard/stiff clutches and internal transmission damage.
If I were too recommend I think I would say the lightest weight FW you can afford, in all the years I have yet to heard of a FW going bad or causing damage.
As for clutch recommendations, stock works pretty well if you don't drag race. If you have sticky tires, from stock power n up and launch at the drag strip where the ground is stickied, be prepared to either brake the clutch or axles. I've been threw a few hard/stiff clutch setups and while easy enough to drive, tranny & axle failure is my middle name. I'd recommend a surface material closest to stock and the pressure plate with only what you need. Not some crazy setup well past your needs.
If I'm not mistaken the stock can hold up to 215whp for anything but drag racing, does anyone have experience with above stock powar levels and stock clutches,,, ahh just state what you know if you feel like sharing.

So I know there are different thoughts on this, please speak up!

Another clutch Rob?

What I have in the FBP at the moment is an ACT PP and excedy organic clutch disc.

I plan on seeing around the 210 WHP mark once tuned. I think this setup will be more than fine and hold up for what I do with the car.

<----- agree's that drag racing is HELL on clutches!

My stockee took at dump at the track in the summer of '06. After lots of research I decided to go with the ACT HDSS. It shares the same feel as stock with a bit more grip IMO. I've pounded on it ever since and it shows no signs letting up. I've seen peeps with 300whp on boosted cars use this same clutch with little to no issues. I've had a Fidanza 7.5lb F/W in there since winter of '05 and only replaced the friction surface when I did the clutch in '06.

It gets a  from me.

I have been running the Competition Clutch Stage 2 along with the 8lb flywheel since before expo with the new tranny.

So far its held up fine. Stock feel but holds well. Personally I would have preferred a stiffer clutch pedal like the ACT HDSS i had.

Then again this is on my LS with R tranny. So I don't know how relevant this is.

I agree. If you are not making crazy power the stock clutch is one of the best there is. I've seen Honda clutches last up tp 200k. When mine eventualy fails I am planning on another stock clutch and lighter flywheel combo.

Through the recommendations of Both Chris(Aquafina) and Marc Tran, I will be purchasing the Action 1KS clutch. My setup should yield around 210-220 and I have DSS Stage 1 axles.
