need advice

Post by itr »

1st
i have a '98 itr w/8000 mi and when i break HARD it's accompanied by a crack/pop sound. this happens at any speed from 5mi/h up. but if a break HARD right away after that it doesn't happen, even if i try it a few times. and then if i drive for a little and break HARD theres that pop again. what is it and what should i do???

2nd
when i bought my itr the first owner spray painted everything that came off WHITE, and he put the stuff back on before it dryed. now i have replaced everything, but on my door panels and dashboard there's white outlining of the shape of these things and you could really see it on black. it looks real crappy and i dont know how to remove it. i know that paint tinner will get it off but at the same time it will damage it, so i wont use it. i have tried the meguiars heavy duty cleaner and that doesnt work either. what should i do???

please help
thanks[/b]

my 98 is o0ut of warranty so his is likely to as we close the books on 2002.

THe pop sounds like the shifting of something. The reason it isn't doing it until you drive again for a while it that is isn't moving quickly but gradually. Could be a suspension piece like an A arm or shock but could also be a caliper bolt that is loose. If you are mechanically inclined got your ratchet and sockets out and tighten all bolts. If not take it somewhere and have it inspected.

cracking noise

like Trey said , check caliper bolts, but don't overlook the brake pads anti rattle springs.
If these babies were omitted at the last brake service, the pads move freely in the brackets, thus clack, clack.
On the same lines of thought, if you have aftermarket pads installed, sometimes they are physically smaller ie plate size=loose. This gives the same result.

Once the pad shifts forward, it stays until you roll backwards...this is why you hear it under 1st stop..
Just an idea.
