98-1040 Rebuild begins...Take II

Post by coolhandluke »

I took delivery of the caR today from mstewar. To recap, this is the second time I have purchased this caR with the intent of restoring her. Mark's girlfriend Jen informed me the car has a name, Ben, and that tradition will continue since I'm not one to name caRs. On to pictures:

I wanna see you, . The downside of Mark delivering the caR was that I didn't have an excuse to come visit the Midwest crew. I'l find an excuse soon enough. :D

I have stuff in the works. This time this isn't another lesser car to distract me with its state of readiness and car payments.

There will be some projects on the caR that are not track oriented etc. I'm doing some things that I have been wanting to do for quite some time, for me. I'm the type that is a big DIY not so much to save money, but because I enjoy doing it. 50% of the fun for me is doing the mod, the project, the install, etc and the other 50% is driving it afterwards. :D

The big mental strain about a rebuild is that it takes forever before you can actually drive it!

Update:

Gave the car a good bath(it needed it) and used suds + Simple Green on the engine bay. These are the same types of shots you've already seen so bear with me. I'm ordering some parts tonight from Marc. In the mean time I'm going to keep install the small pieces I have left over from the GS-R.

-Removed console pieces
-Vacuumed underneath the carpet
-Vacuumed carpet
-Cleaned the console pieces
-Swapped out shifter surround(lame switches) with a spare
-Swapped in OEM red stitched shift boot
-Installed Mugen pedals(They were just as much of a pain the second time.)
-Installed floormat holder

Miner updates:

I installed the floormat clip and floormats. They were dirty and I'm just tired from a long day at school (9:30am-9:00pm). Hopefully this weekend I can dive into some more serious projects.

Installed the floormat clip:

Install my Moo-gen pedals(They were every as annoying as the first time):

I also removed the rear wiper assembly, but I'l save pictures for the before and after. I need to search and find the same replacement plug I had in my GS-R. That is all for now folks.

Make sure you save all pics/copies. I wanna see the whole thing once finished, and I'm sure you'll like the reference too.

I too will be making an "updating car" thread soon enough.

I'm really bad about taking pictures. I need to make a habit of bringing the camera into the garage with me. I wear gloves, so I just need to set aside the time to show the progress.

On top updates:

Here is a previous picture of the quarter panel rust:
Image

Here is some of the rust I discovered today, and promptly took care of. It's a difficult spot and I'm not body man.
Image

I replaced the rotors last night, old rotors:
Image

And here are the new rotors:
Image

Bare hubs, I may simply remove the dust shields for heat purposes. They look modified already:
Image

And the final product(rotor wise):
Image

The right front caliper appears to be leaking/damaged. I'l have to get some input on this one.
Image

The front pads were shot on both sides, both outters were almost to the backing plates.
Image

Image

I'm still researching pads, so those have yet to be ordered. I have plenty of time though so there really isn't a rush.

Parting shot:

Heat shields= off. Many many miles w/o mine and no adverse problems.
Clapper looks like it has CV joint grease on it.
Old rotors look ok, check the thickness before tossing in the garbage.
Did you put new wheel bearings in before putting it all back together?
progress looks good.

Thanks, you add more proof to a recommendation by Koala Yummies. I'l make a plan to remove them. I want to get the old rotors turned down and measure their thickness. If they are still within spec I'm going to use them. Wheel bearings are on the list, but I was planning on replacing them when I do the suspension later this winter/spring.

Update:

The Engine and transmission have been picked up. User Aquafina from Whoopee Doo Racing will be handling all the assembly. There is not secret to build:

Engine: 01' Spec B18C5 :D
-OEM Bottom end
-Rocket Motorsports Mx22 Cams
-Rocket Motorsports Springs, Retainers
-Supertech Valves
-Rocket Motorsports P&P

Transmission: 98' JDM ITR
-MFactory LSD
-MFactory 1st
-MFactory Final Drive
-MFactory Close ratio gearset, 3-4-5 gears.

No clue on the turnaround. Chris(Aquafina) ordered the majority of the parts today but the deciding factor will be Rocket Motorsports turnaround time on the head.

Another small update:

PARTS:

BlueR Shipment (Great seller)
Image
-Russell Stainless Steel lines
-Edlebrock TB, matches Edlebrock VictorX(hasn't arrived)
-Samco coolant hoses

New(to me) floor mats from user Migs(Great seller)
Image
-Used, he actually included an extra passenger

Shift linkage, shifter, shift bushin from Migs
Image

Real-Time Racing Goodness that came in:
Image

I install the SS lines in the rear, still waiting on pads to come in. At that point I'l buy rear rotors.
Image

I started putting on the rear exhaust but realized I am missing 3x rubber hangers. I am going to try and buy them today from Autozone etc. Also, I still need to clean the front brake calipers. At that time I'l install the front SS lines, but I'm thinking I will wait for the pads to arrive from VPR Motorsports. Stay tuned!

Nice parts you're tossing on the R.

So when are you hoping to have it road worthy?

Maybe for the WTD event at CMP?

Nothing would make me happier to have it ready and driveable by We-Todd. That would be, awesome. It would make sense too if I could, I would love to have Jack tune it. We're just gonna have to wait and see. The OEM order list continues to grow, and some things are simply out of my hands. I had a minor setback on the tranny in terms of its condition. That issue seems to be resolved. The tranny needs all three hubs/shift collars, second gear, third gear synchro, and other items. Its just bad luck that the only gear bad is the only gear I need (since every other gear was already being replaced.) I should be able to get those items ordered and hopefully the transmission can get back on track.

The engine assembly has been keeping me busy with part numbers. Right now I'm working on three lists: Engine assembly(Mate the head to the block), Swap parts(What I will need to make it running, driving), and a Suspension parts list.

In reality, the front is pretty beat/trashed but the car will drive with it. I am still waiting on someone with body knowledge to view the front end. My main concerns are the welds/seam sealer- I want to make sure they are legitimate and safe. 2/5 tabs for each headlight are missing(fender, grille) but they can still be securely mounted. With the body kit front bumper, I couldn't run a grille even if I wanted too. I have LS front seats in my daily civic, so they could be transfered to make the car running driving. My main issue there would be the ~10 holes and 6'' crack in the sheetmetal on the trunk. A member on honda-tech has sourced me a trunk, and I just need to contact him to have it shipped my way. After break-in and tuning, the car should be running and driving. /rant
