final cut

@dave - as far as pulling video off tapes (assuming DV tapes) then I use firewire. If it's an analog format (VHS, hi8, etc) then I use a breakout box by a company called Canopus that takes in an analog signal and converts it to a digital stream that is captured via firewire

I'm downloading Final Cut Pro 7 now. :)

Dave, if you are running XP or Vista then Windows Movie Maker is the native app that will import MiniDV's to AVI.

if it's miniDV or VHS I can do it, if it's Hi8 or 8mm then I can't.

Tried all that, no dice.

only have USB, no FW.

You'll need FW to import the video. I think that old Mac sitting in your dining room has FW on it. I also might have a PCMCIA FW card.

does it have RCA output (yellow/red/white)? If so I have a breakout box to convert that signal to be picked up by FW (it's how I capture VHS and burn to DVD)

I've got an RCA video capture device that is USB if you need to borrow it.

Yes, I'd love to get all of my old vid off of tape. Tons of in car stuff.

I'd suggest that thing that I have if you want to capture it the right way as DV footage. Through USB you can only ever get that weird 352x240 bullshit and not 720x480. I can do it for you, it's not that hard.

if I can borrow any hardware it would be greatly appreciated! I'd love to pull all that old footage!

you can borrow the box, do you have a firewire port on your computer?

Re: Technology Thread

Yup. So it's RCA to FW right? Then XP's movie maker to capture. Correct?
