Ok Erik, looks like I might only get one shot at this. What kind of settings would you suggest for something like that. It's going to be night, but bright because of the rocket boosters. Suggestions?

hmm...... I can't really think of anything. I've never tried shots like that. I'd say try somewhere around 1/100 as a starting point and then vary as you see fit. You should have a good bit of time to experiment as it get going and takes off.

Vary? How, I'm only going to get one shot? Come on camera man, you must know. :P I'm going to try to get as close as possible, which will most likely only be about 5-6 miles from the launch pad. Though it sounds far, it's a great view.

var‧y  /ˈvɛəri/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[vair-ee]
1. to change or alter, as in form, appearance, character, or substance: to vary one's methods.

:P

Those things take a good while to get very high. Just set the camera on shutter priority and try different things. Try shooting a fire in the dark although the rocket will be much brighter. Try shooting fireworks beforehand.

I'd say somewhere between 1/100 and 1/600 ought to be pretty good. Since you'll be so far away and there isn't really a background just set it to manual focus, get things squared and have at it.

Hey, I know I got this fucking one right. I was saying how can I VARY the shot when I've only got one chance... :P

As for the shot, you make that shit sound easy. I'm hoping I can get what I'm after. I'll be using the 70-300mm lens so hopefully I can capture some sort of detail. Hell, right now I want that 80k lens so I could capture a picture of the secondarys breaking away.

You could probably catch the astronaut triggering the release for them with that lens.

It is pretty easy dude. Just practice. The only way you can learn what works for various situations is to shoot as many shots as you can until you figure out what works.

Probably. That would be perfect.

Yeah, I know but I figured I'd ask to see what kind of range I should start with or try.
