black widows are infact living under the house... saw a 'few' when I was under there Sunday shutting the crawl space vents and cleaning out the dryer vent pipe.

btw: I pulled ~3 gallons of lint out of the dryer vent pipe (~15 foot of ~4" pipe). I was  at the stuff that was stuck inside of there. :x
I have been delaying that operation. Any tips or tricks? Our dryer has never finished a large load on one cycle. Methinks it moves a lot more air than the previous one did, and cannot breathe well enough.

That should increase your dryer's efficiency. That's wild, when was the last time you were down there???
I asked my wife to see what changes (if any) occur.
last time I was under the house was this past spring when i opened up the vents. :P

the dryer vent pipe has never been cleaned (as far as I can tell)... it looked ~40% blocked.
the last dryer was a pofs... so that may be where some of the lint came from. the current dryer has a moisture sensor.. so it just runs till a certain moisture content is detected and then the element turns off and it runs a little while longer for da fluffz.

house is ~20 years old.

tips = wear a mask. :P
i used the fridge brush and taped it to the end of a broom and had Nicole turn the dryer on (no heat) and rodded the pipe out (where I could not reach).

then banged the pipe a bit to shake the stubborn bits off.

i had a trash can sitting right under the open end of the pipe and most all of the lint fell right in the can.

only thing I can figure is that the moisture from the clothes makes the inside of the pipe sticky and the lint sticks to it and then drys and crusts up.

the new dryer trapps the lint well so not as much will get into the pipe. :fingers crossed: 8)
i may see if the local hardware store has new pipes (with smoother insides) and swap the vent pipe out.

the one under there looks like a hvac/water heater vent pipe (galvanized) and does not need to be so weather proof.

For the exhaust pipe, make sure they are metal. Plastic ones can catch on fire, metal contains fire not spreads.
As for cleaning... High power shop vac ;)
And just like a car exhaust... less bends the better ;)
The reason why the lint sticks, soap residue. I've seen this many times when detailing cars. If there is still some soap (not rinsed well enough) the lint contains soap and gets stuck on anything while wet and then builds up.
In other words, cut back on the amount of soap, thus saving money ;)

I will have to check on ours this weekend. The newer dryer is considerably larger than the old, almost too big for the laundry closet. There may be a kink right there at the back.

Long ago I saw this fitting that you could hack into an interior wall - basically cut the drywall around the current vent fitting, and get yourself another ~3" inches of depth for the hose. I don't remember which big-box had it, and both look at me like I'm special when I ask about it.

Amen, I go with the flex. hose and just replace it every few years. Learn not to burn.
Also clean the flapper valve on the outside of the house. Lint can cause flapper to stick open and let cold air in the house when dryer is not running.

jup... flappers are cleaned every month for sure.
i just saw the hunks in there and decided to investigate. :D

I am sure glad I did.

we have an electric dryer (would love a gas unit)... so that may have kept the fire risk low.

the plumber came and went (~2 hours worth of work)... and we are $240 lighter. :P
-the leak was fixed
-the front spigot is working (for the first time since I have lived here (~10 years))
-the water pressure has increased
-and the plumber installed a new sleeve thru the foundation to help prevent future bends/leaks.

Sweet man, that went smooth. My friends hot water heater went out yesterday and the guy qouted him 1100 bucks to install!! Told him we'd do it for free :P

F-that, waterheaters are really easy to install! I mean, you can buy the install kit from Lowes for like $20.

but that serves no purpose. Some of them have stated that's what they're trying to do. It's not a living thing needing to be put out of it's misery or a way of life (some will argue that), it's a fucking web forum. A database of information and discussions. Yeah, it's pretty fucked up now with all the restructuring and crappy moderation by some, but there's no reason to go out of your way to fuck it up more.
