Heya Joe!
My brother shot his first Buck last weekend (Before T-day) Funny quick story...
So he shoots it, has to drag it for 400 yards... finally gets it to the truck (shot it with a shotgun, slug BTW)
He takes it to the processor and asks if they can do a head mount. They say no but say he can do it himself and hand him a hack saw. They mentioned it's already dead and shouldn't bleed a lot.
So there my brother is, saw in hand hacking off the things head. Says he still had about 12" of neck, so he could make a decent mount...
So my brother cuts the head, puts it in a cooler to take to the taxidermiest.
So... 4 days later, he's been putting ice in the cooler because he didn't have a chance to actually get down there yet. I need to call him today and find out if he finally got it there, or if it's still even good to make one after sitting that long, even on ice.
So, Joe... can it still be mounted?

Congrats on the buck to him
Need pixors
Mount should be fine. Keeping cool is good, salting the underside of the skin is best.
12" of neck? ew, haha. Usually for a normal mount you want to skin it from just behind the front shoulder, cutting a seem up the back of the neck to the skull. Cut the skull from the top of the neck.
If he didn't save the hide from the shoulders, then he can only do a neck mount deer head. Which is ok too.
400 yard drag = argh. I did a half mile drag once but it was mostly downhill
I'm getting to hate dragging deer..

Just got to be careful with icing....if the skin gets too wet/soaked from melting ice, the hair can start falling off.

LOL, thanks for the info. This is his first mount (Pics up on his facebook page, but I'm not a facebook member so I dont' know the link)
I know he got him through the lung, not sure how/if that affected where to cut for a mount.
I need to call him anyway to see what was going on for the mounting.
So, for my info... do you take the brain/tongue and other head/neck/face organs out when you do a mount?

Facebook
haha
Lung shot = goot.
He is taking it to a taxidermist right? They will clean out the head from the hide and antlers....though they prolly won't be too thrilled about the whole neck still being there.
This is all they save from the animal...plus the hide.
The whole rest of the skull is garbage.
They use a plastic form to mount the antlers and then wrap the hide.

Nephew shot a doe Friday in mom & dads backyard. Clean shot, she dropped on the spot. That's Brittan, dad, and bro-in-law.

Notice the old man is holding a ball peen hammer. He'll smack 'em upside the head if there's a round in that rifle.
Everyone in the family is schooled in gun safety and that rifle was checked before they set it down.

Hunt at my place, sit on the couch, aim out the porch door and BAM you got up to 15 on any given night. Best part is it's no more then a 1 minuet walk to drag the deer back
(disclaimer: not sure if that is legal to shoot from indoors
)

It's legal in NY....only issue is neighbors. You have to be 500 feet from any occupied dwelling, school or church unless you have permission.....then you're good to go

LOL
Round here, there is so much property... if someone wasn't in a neighborhood, I'm sure they could get away with it.
