The real question with Android is how many are going to root it? (same thing as jailbraking an Iphone/Ipad/Ipod)

It sounds like most of the stuff I wouldn't like about an ifone is opened up on the androids. What would rooting it get me?

It gets you root access. You can now load custom roms, kernals and all sorts of stuff like a wifi 3G hot spot with wireless tether.

Android 2.2 was announced today, includes Wifi Hot Spot and Wireless Tethering, along with a bunch of other stuff like a JIT(Just-In-Time) Compiler, better Exchange support, and Flash.

Yep, all of those things were on 1.5.... but you had to root and load custom roms and such. Looks like they finally got the idea and put it out on the RUU version of the Android OS.

<Rooted G1 (original Android), using Cyanogen roms. It's had wireless tethering, usb tethering, and anything else you can think of ready to roll. Rooting allows a lot of nice custom roms too which let you customize many more things. No idea if they'll finally open it all that stuff on 2.2 or not.

how big is your workcenter? I don't think there is anyway I could handle being the only IT guy for an organization having to deal with end users and stuff
