Take it to the dealership, have them drain it and measure the oil. Right?

On the 1 series this is correct. They didn't intend for the teenage girls which mainly drive them to do their own maintenance.

Haha. Yeah. Being used to hondas they may be a bit intimidating because of higher cost and different than what you know but theyre really very simple well-thought out cars. A few things are a bit silly and like jack always says they've got more relays than god but it's very easy to work on. Parts are a bit expensive for the 46s and newer cars but otherwise everything is comparably priced with integras. Just have to get in there and do it. Lol @ oil change kit. Like Honda the only factory consumable really worthwhile is the coolant.itrsteez wrote:
I just don't know shit about these cars, going to force myself to start learning this time though like doing all of the VANOS PM work. I actually have to order the $90 DIY oil change kit today, lol.
I was just talking to someone about this yesterday but in the year and a half that I've owned this particular horrifically unreliable M3 the only maintenance I've had to do to are normal consumables and replace a 15 yr old worn out door switch. What a lemon....

Are you suggesting not to use the recomended oil? While it sounds great for savings to slam in 7 quarts of GTX I'll just continue to go the normal route. $90 at home or $140 at the dealership, friggen crazy.

Use what people find to work best or talk to blackstone labs and see what they recommend. Any good high zinc oil shouldn't cause any issues

I don't think I've heard of anybody using anything but the TWS 10w60... the 200k guy posted only did the 15k intervals too (which I've always done 7500)

Loads of people have had zero issues using other oils. By all means use whatever you feel works best but I can tell you all the metal an bearings in that engine have no idea they're in an M3.

And it's a monthly service too since BMW setup all the EPROM modules in their E46 block castings to purge every 28 days or so. Something about wanting their cars to be more like them. Don't even think about taking one to the beach either. You'll have a very tempermental e46 on your hands.

the real value is in being able to obtain optional trunk mats for under $600Erik95LS wrote:And it's a monthly service too since BMW setup all the EPROM modules in their E46 block castings to purge every 28 days or so.
