Prospective potential ITR owner

Hey all,

Not sure if this is the place to put this, but mods please move or remove if necessary.

Not an ITR owner yet, but I've been increasingly drawn to them for their rarity and performance prowess. I'm a traditional Nissan guy, but I dabbled in the Honda world with an NSX for around a year and wanted to see what some other Hondas had to offer such as the S2K and ITR.

I'm currently driving a heavily modified '75 Datsun Z with a nice 4 door G35 6MT Sport as a DD. I'll probably end up selling the G35 to pick up an ITR after I complete my move from Tennessee to Texas ( I'm training en route for the Air Force ). Just wanted to say hey and see if any of you Texas guys were thinking of separating from your beloved ITR. :D

Any particular issues that the ITR suffers from? I know from the NSX world that TB/WP service is critical and that there are the typical oil leak suspects and AC issues to watch out for. Should probably search, but wanted a quick, short rundown.

Welcome to ITRCA :!:

Theft is by far the biggest concern....hence why your insurance will be higher than your old NSX's :P :(
Traditional alarms and security will not protect heR. Professional theft rings target these cars. Metro Texas areas have always been tough for ITRs to live. I wouldn't plan on using it as a DD or leaving it parked outside unattended. A garage is a must-have.

Other than that....they're great cars. Incredibly awesome drivers car. Reliability is like any other Honda. The main difference being that the motors are more likely to burn oil over time. When shopping, a compression and leak-down test of the motor will tell a bunch.

If you're still interest.. :P ...shoot away with more questions and we'll help you out. Also, if you see any ITR ads you want a 2nd or 10th opinion on .....post it up. :)

Thanks a bunch guys.

I wish I were in some sort of metro area in TX! The closest place I'll be is 2 hours from San Antonio on the Mexican border. The car will stay on base and I work on base, so the only way I think theft would be a danger would be if I went off base and left it for an extended period of time, but even then, Del Rio is so small.

I have heard of NSX's getting stolen out of garages, so those aren't the safest places either!
My ideal garage would be an ITR, S2K, NSX, and my beloved turbo Z.

Getting stationed at one of those middle of nowhere bases was my greatest fear of being in the AF, I can't say that you can be too cautious but I'm sure you will not have to remain on high alert like many do.

Being that you owned an NSX, I'm sure you're used to explaining why such an old car with weak ass WHP is uberly cool and valuable. hehe.

I recently acquired my R and I love it. Going from 520whp to 175whp was a big change, however one I'll never regret. When people make claims of the ITR being the best handling FWD car ever manufactured, I've got to say it's really tough to argue with that now owning one. :)

No one really gave me guff about the NSX because most people didn't know what it was, and people who did usually had half the brain to not bring up power issues.

I'm more interested in the feel and response from a car than outright brute power. If I want my jollies, I go drive the Z. I've always heard the same about the ITR, that it's the best handling FWD car ever made. Is it true that the rear suspension is completely different from any other spec of Integra such as the GS-R?

It's alright though. Only there for a year and a half or so for pilot training and then off to somewhere else.

Its not completely different, but it is different. The subframe is reinforced to allow for the larger sway bar, and the rear lower control arms are different, along with the shocks.

You'll be very pleased with an ITR. Every time I drive mine(which is rarely now) I enjoy it more and more. I hate to sell mine, but I have to. :(

Owning both a GSR and an ITR, there is a big difference in how the car feels. The ITR stock felt much firmer, yet forgiving than my moded, stiff as hell GSR. Honda claims that the rear sheet metel around the shock towers is thicker as well so I am sure this helps attribute to the difference in feel. The front chassis on both cars is the same.

A good friend of mine who formerly owned an ITR and a NSX has said that the NSX was easy to drive at speed on a race track and lacked the rawness of his old ITR.

These cars don't wear out.
I've had a couple of age related repairs, over the past 7 years:

plastic radatior tank
a hatch release "actuator's clip" that slipped off

I just bought a 2000 ITR, and it suffers from what I consider pretty standard issues that you will probably experience, unless your car has super low miles for it's age. These issues are fairly standard for all the older Civics/Integras I've owned.

1.) Oil burns at a rate of at least a half litre of oil per tank. - smokes when revving past 6000 rpm.
2.) Very annoying loud metallic creak from behind the dashboard area when the chassis twists over bumps in the road
3.) Power antenna motor is worn out making very loud noise when going up or down
4.) Rattles from muffler and heat shields on exhaust
5.) Front Wheel Bearings and ball joints due for replacing

Have had none of those issues with either of my ITRs.

Funny you have the creak from the dash - that just started happening on mine and it's very annoying. I did read somewhere that this is a known issue for integras and that it is fixable, but I haven't yet figured out what the correct fix is.

I guess I'm lucky in one way - my car has 135k miles and doesn't burn any oil at all, so I shouldn't get too worked up about the dash thing.

Oil burning is pretty normal, although my 97 doesn't burn a drop. PO reported it burned 1 qt every 3,000 miles, in the 5k I've driven it, it hasn't loss a drop since I changed the engine oil drain plug crush washer.

Haven't had the creak in any of my Integras yet, even my beat to hell GS-R, but maybe it's so loud from the other rattles that I can't hear it :)

Power Ant. motors suck on these cars, my GS-R has been broken since 2002. ITR one still works though, likely because the PO installed a switch and turned it off unless using the radio. I've found that they die after extended high speed driving on the highway with them up.

ITR has the heat sheild rattles, GS-R heatshields removed in 2001 so they never really got to the point of rattling :)

Wheel bearings, ball joints, etc are def wear items.

So far, for actual failures on my GS-R (haven't had any on my 97 ITR during my short ownership so far):
-Radiator (common issue, seal on the plastic end tanks fail - ITR has a replacement radiator so it likely had this problem with a PO)
-Clutch master cylinder
-Brake master cylinder
-Power Antenna

That's with a LOT of track miles and serious abuse. All preventative maintenance is done though (clutch replacements, timing belts, water pumps, other belts, etc).

Alright, so it sounds like they're pretty bulletproof.

It's a long shot finding one though. It's 2.5hrs to San Antonio which is where I'll have to look because it's pretty dismal out here. That's assuming someone wants to buy my G35 too haha.

Hey bud! Yeah I'm pretty sure I remember when you bought the NSX. Didn't your ITR put down a ridiculous amount of power?

Yeah let me know if you see anything. I'm out at Laughlin, so I'm a wayyyyyyys away from any good deals probably.

Fly out and buy mine. It's almost impossible to find an ITR you want without traveling. I only had to go 4 hours for my first one but the current one was a 13hr drive to get it and to be honest it was great driving it home.

What part of VA? I'm originally from East TN. I need everything mostly OEM, or can be put back to OEM, so I couldn't really consider yours.

I ended up flying to DC for the NSX, so it can't be much worse haha.

I'm a ROTC kid from the University of Tennessee. I went to USAFA for a semester and said screw this, but my roomie is a guy who was in my squad there.
