What causes the "farty" sound?

Post by AdamF »

Just wondering if it's the muffler, or the intake that actually causes it on the car...or if it's a combination of both.

Sorry, wasn't specific enough. I wasn't referring to the Type R. I meant when I hear it on say, a GS-R with a modified intake and exhaust. Civics are another example (probably the most prevalent) of a car that seems to acquire this sound from many of the popular CAI/Exhaust packages.

The exhaust is generally the source of "farty" sounds (both in Cars and in Chris N's case)

Ah okay. I was under the impression that the CAI is what really gave it the famous farty sound.

Low quality exhaust systems are usually the culprit.

The intake system will also change the sound of the car but I don't think it can be classified as a Farty Sound.

Sometimes the change in the exhause velocity (i.e., when you are on the throttle pretty hard and let off all the way) will change the sound of the exhaust. Some come out farty, some just changes tones a bit.
