hey yall i was wondering if it was ok/better to add half a quart more of motor oil to the engine when youre pushing the car hard (redlining) once in a while. a while back, when i didnt put the extra motor oil in, the car would knock for a while when idling after an extensive driving session. so i thought of this. :) its not leaking anywhere, but once in a month id have to add half a quart. any better ideas or comments?

i guess it burns the oil since i use synthtic.

yes all hondas with high rpm bands will burn a little oil. Dont over fill her though. As far as the knocking I dont think its an oil issue. You might wanna try some injector cleaner every other oil change or so. What octane you pumping anyway?

well since i live in LA, the highest octane level is 91 octane from "chevron with techron". although there are higher levels of octane (93), surveys in magazine showed these companies were not as clean.

Add some Octane booster if you need to. But I recommend the Lucas Fuel injector Cleaner Number one it costs less than 3 bux, Two it works really good. Cleans Injectors and improves gas milage, and three it costs less than 3 bux :D

Now octane booster is a bit more expensive but it will be like killing two birds with one stone as octane booster will also clean your injectors

On road courses? You can have oil starvation during high load cornering, to fix that, use a baffled pan. You can add 1/2 qt extra, I've done it on hot days at sebring and such to try and prevent starvation. The actual pinging issue is more likely to be fuel related.

Octane booster adds very very little octane btw.

Wouldn't it depend on the formula?
Explain what you mean. I know there is a difference in concentrtions and brands as I have tried several types (including one that claims to add 25 Hp LOL) Funny thing is I did notice a difference after using that one, but I dare not say it was a 25 hp increase. I have experienced a difference between NOS brand raod formula (claims to add 3 points) and their Race formula(claims to add 7 points)

As a general rule of thumb, it's not a good idea to overfill you engine oil. Reason being, if the higher than normal oil level reaches the crankshaft height it then gets whipped repeatedly by that rotation creating lots of foam (air) in your oil. Then when your oil pump tries to suck through oil to supply the motor it's getting a lot of air and not oil, which is as we all know is not good for lubrication.

I'm sure a little more than normal is okay, but I'm not sure what the limit is.

a "point" doesnt mean a "octane level"....
1 point is very small.....

First, "points" are TENTHS of 1 R+M/2. IE, from 92 octane, a booster that adds 7 points makes it 92.7 octane assuming the product is true to advertising.

Toulene, in a 30% mix will raise 92 octane gas to 98.6 octane. That 30% is a shitload more than a 16 ounce can of over the counter octane booster (whose ingredients vary as well). Toulene is one of the more common boosters and has a R+M/2 octane of 114.

Either way, there's no need to run this on base timing with an ITR anyways. any good 91 or higher octane will work fine. Increasing octane too much without increasing timing or compression will simply reduce the power of the combustion as the gas will burn too slowly.

Your "race" formula probably contains Toulene and Xylene (R+M/2 117) and likely Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether (R+M/2 118, but is an oxygenate, which will burn a bit better)

BTW, for the $ you are spending on those octane booster cans, you can get gallons of the shit from paint and chemical supply stores.

injector cleaner sounds good. i was thinking about buying the octane boosters, but when i thought about the money id be spending on it, its too much. just keeping my car clean and healthy is all i need in my opinion :D
