for all u guys that auto X or road race out there, is there a benefit in taking out powersterring. i heard u have more road feel, and u do gain a little more hp. I also hear that it doesn't make any differance track wise

what is your thoughts on this?

I like power steering on the street and for autox (because of the low speeds) but prefer no power steering for HPDE's

You do feel a difference. And I gained about 3whp across the band without the PS belt.

I prefer my power steering at Auto-X and track. I have driven a Type-R with the power steering removed properly at a track that i also drove my car on and it was not as bad as auto-x but i did not like it.

It's hard to fault the ITR steering. The rack gives great feedback in auto-x and never locks in tight slaloms ( the SH and SIr do it all the time). And on the track the feedback is precise. Why would you take it off if it does the job...think about lapping weekends when you do 2 hrs per day...P/S is the way to go.
Ditto for the ITR ABS...works great...keep it!

If you're like me & have an "early-turn in" tendancy, then removing the ps belt helps slow your jerkiness down. I personnally love it without the belt even for daily driving.

I just think the "feel" of the car on the track is better without the belt.

okay - since July I removed the ENTIRE p/s system. I have to say it drives just like removing the belt, but eliminated ~12 lbs of CRAP

There are people in other forums who claim to have reduced the perceived effort by doing it the 'right way" (i.e., looping and venting).

You really don't notice any difference between doing it this way and just removing the belt?

George,

I need to remove a bit more fluid & try it. I've installed the Padwan kit from HT. He did and EXCELLENT job putting it together = well worth the money to not go part searching on my own.

I've got fluid just visible at the bottom of the resevoir...I'll remove some this spring.

Well, hurry up, dammit. :P

It'd be good to know if I want to do this while we're working on the other stuff.

Know anybody else I can ask?

Sorry George - I probably won't have a chance to change fluid level for another week or two when I can get the car out for a drive. I'll keep you posted though.

I don't know anyone else other than those on the HT thread who have tried to remove the system.

**Even if it is NO easier then just removing the belt, I think it's worth it. I always tie down the a/c belt before a track day & now I don't have the p/s pump in the way!!

I have p/s removed (not just the belt) and the Padawan kit installed.

Ok - when I first got it - I thought - OMFG this is a really big difference!!You get used to it very quickly though and in my opinion improves feel by a large margin. you really can feel the tires a lot better and the overly light feeling of the steering at speed disappears.

I got to drive a Proformance race car this summer for a 2-day school. This is a tube frame race car with manual steering. I thought the steering was clunky and not very precise in that instance. The Type R is heaven in comparison.

I think if you track your car a lot it is a nice mod.

The downside of course is increased steering effort - esp parallel parking. My Type R is a "sunday" car - so that aspect doesn't bother me.

George,

There is a very large difference in just removing the belt and actually removing some fluid/venting the system. Almost night and day.

See me at the expo and I'll let you take my ITR for a qwik spin, then you can tell me if it is a perceived differance or not.

Matt - I've used padwan's kit & removed my p/s system. Is your fluid level down at the rack or up the hose all the way to the resivoir? I'm thinking I need to take a bit more fluid out to make the effort less. Currently it's just a bit less than the 'no belt' option.

btw- nice to see you on our boards! I wanna see your dart block in action  Is it all completed?

I have been here before just never posted.

My fluid is in the rack, I can't see it at all. When I first set the beather up and turned the wheel I shot fluid through the breather hole =big mess :o

Yes the Dart talldeck is in the car, only have about 600 miles on it and its currently in storage/modify mod for the winter. I am raising the rear suspension spring rates, installing ARP wheel studs, swapping front upper A-arms and trying to shed some more weight over this winter.

If you are speaking about for track use (providing whomever you are racing with allows the removal of it in the rules) take it out- no ps is great on track- less weight, more hp, and the most important part the better feel/response.
I haven't actually driven without it on my R (as I don't race it yet) but I know Franza (ECHC) doesn't use it in his for same reason, and my track/racecar is a Civic, and we removed the ps. I love it with no ps!!
I wouldn't go without it though (me personally) for daily driving nor auto-X at low speeds its a pain in the bootie! I've actually sprained my wrist driving the Civic with no ps on race tires at a auto-X, and that lesson is what stopped me from removing it from my R until its 100% track car.
