alright so heres the deal. my neighbor, whos runnin a mustang, with a v8 and i think 280 hp? i know its not above 300 but anyways, hes saying he could smoke my itr, which is stock since i havent been able to scrape up enough cash to buy the bolt ons and all that. but anyways, just to set him straight, who would win, considering we are both about the same drivin ability? i know my r would smoke him in a road course and the 1/4, but he wont believe me. anyways, bottom line, and itr or a v8 mustang in the quarter?
thanks guys

Last time I was at the strip a current generation GT 5spd ran mid 14s, if he's running close to 300whp, then expect 13s, your stock R should run high 14s. If you are referring to illegal street racing then anything goes, but this site does not promote or condone illegal street racing.

Have to agree with Jan here. 1/4 he will likely win by a nose. Road Course you should have an edge and on the streets you both lose.

he would win man. If he can't drive and you could drive your ass off...you might sneek a win in...but please keep if off the streets...

Good response Jan...
Remember, if all else fails...just make fun of him for only being able to produce ~ 58hp/liter in that hunk o'junk...
Your R produces ~107hp/liter stock=>if his 4.8liter did the same, then he should be roughly 520hp! I guess he's not so nifty afterall in the steel beast rustang that weighs ~600lbs more than your R.

Oh yea - get him on the track sooooooon. Let him take you to the strip & then you take him to a road course & you'll both get to see how funny the stang's can be.

Another question to ask is "does he have a gear"? Those Rustang boys need a decent final drive upgrade to really knock down 1/4 times. If he's running a stock 2.73 or 3.08 he'll be a lot slower than he is with a 3.55, 3.73 or 4.10.
My brother's 90 LX 5.0 notchback has ~ 280 whp w/3.73 fd and ownz my Type R. Ridiculous amounts of torque from idle to about 4.5K. After that it gasps for air. Solid low-mid 13 second car at ~103-4.
I see tailights before I hookup in first, then it's I stay pretty close (at the track of course).

I remember there being an article in SCC awhile back (not saying that it's reliable, just that it was done), covering just this topic. They tested the Mustang GT and R in several trials, 1/4 mile, roadcourse, mountain road, skidpad, etc. On the windy backroads, the R whooped up, but no surprise there. 1/4 mile, the Mustang had the edge. The big deal was that the Mustang got better lap times than the R on both tested road courses. While not as precise or anything, lap times are lap times. Of course, having followed a few Mustangs at Summit Point (aside from that electric blue SVT...damn that sucker was fast), they were not that impressive.

I do have a few bolt-ons, but a 90-92 GT w/3.55 gears was no sweat from any gear.
Notice to that your "sucker was fast" Mustang was an SVT Cobra at $45,000 compared to your R...that Mustang better have a decent driver on any road course if it wants to stay in front. At least that's my experience **passing viper AFTER my crank pulley bolt fell out - cough, cough**

He was driving very well from what I could tell, and it was a later SVT, maybe 95 or so (I don't know new mustang years, I know it was the body before the current body), and I know he was modified, though not to what extent. He gets a :thumbs up: from me.

If its a newer Mustang V8, 5-speed you will be beaten from a stop or roll. Although the pre-98 models had some issues and arent as strong as newer models. But it all does come down to the driver in the end.

What year Mustang is it? Is it 5spd or auto? If it is a 99 or newer 5spd, he will take you in the 1/4 no doubt, unless he is a just horrible driver. If he is auto, it would be close in the 1/4. The older 4.6 and 5.0 Mustangs are easy to make fast, but if stock can be beaten rather easily.
On the road course its a whole different ballgame. Depending on the course, its a toss-up...if I recall that SCC article correctly, the Mustang won in one configuration and the R won in the other.
The thing is....he has a high torque RWD V8 engined car....he *should* be faster in the 1/4...physics dictate he has the advantage. What a lot of people dont understand is that in the quarter mile, the ITR is totally out of its element. You are putting your car's weakest trait against the Mustangs strongest trait. Sure, go to the strip and possibly get beaten by a bit....then invite him to the next autocross and hand him his ass on a platter.

Oh, I know I should get roasted on the straights by him. I was just surprised that he was doing so well throught the turns, as even there he was not slow. As for the SCC article, I'll look that up tonight, I'm almost sure the Mustang won both. Not that I want to flaunt that or anything, but it was surprising.

It used to be up on the ITRSport.com website, but it appears to no longer exist?!? The complete article was out there the other day, I just looked at it.
And the Mustang did win on the Streets of Willow in one config, but not another (more curvey) section. It was close in both though.
