Bolt-on Recommendations

Post by DGibb »

Anyone here found which brand bolt-on's has produced the best gains?

Im asking for opinions on:

- Intake (SRI or CAI and Brand)
- Headers (Brand)
- Exhaust (Size and Brand)

What else would you recommend on a completely N/A setup?

Thanks all!

most intakes are the same...the AEM intake has a 3" diameter for the ITR - its the most popular. However, the Comptech Ice Box will yield only SLIGHTLY better gains.

headers...DC Sports, GReddy, etc they all use the same design. Now SMSP or Hytech build some incredible headers that would definitely give more power.

Exhausts...yet again, most of the mainstream companies have identical designs. Again, Hytech makes an exhaust for the ITR that is INCREDIBLE.

Ok I figured I was gonna go with AEM intake in the first place, thanks for the info on the other parts.

Whats another must have for a NA setup? I know the standered bolt-ons will not get me to my goal, which is 200whp, any other recommendations on a NA setup without having to work on the engine directly?

maybe upgrading to bigger cams and pulleys? maybe putting in a piggyback/race ECU?

you can also add a VAFC and tune it.......

My $0.02 . . .

Intake: Icebox (hands down, same power less noise)
Header: Toda (Best off the shelf power and clearance)
Exhaust: mkteller 2.5" custom exhaust. (Customizable for noise)
ECU/Fuel Management: Power FC, AEM EMS or Hondata (All great options)
Cam Gears: Toda, Corsa
Cams: If it's a 97 or 98 ITR throw a 2000/2001 Intake cam in. Stock Cams make good power (190whp).

I love the sound of my intake.

Make sure you get a header with a 2.5" collector....the lowest priced one that I would go with is the DC JDM header....and by golly, that's the one I'm buying, haha. :D

AEM intake is loud for louds sake. That's is an attention getter I see no need for. It's like running ALtezzas to me.

He asked for the most effective mods. 2.5" collector is a must but a DC JDM won't keep up with a Toda header. It will cost you but it will make your exspense worth the while.

Trey, by off the shelf power, you mean that it dynos better w/o tuning than other headers w/no tuning?
Exhaust: mkteller 2.5" custom exhaust. (Customizable for noise)
I hope that guy makes it. He's a very nice, small retailer who listens to what people want and seems determined to offer the parts cheaply.

Since you're also recommending ECU, I'm more curious about what you said about the Toda header. :D

By off the shelf I mean available tomorrow and sub $999. It is a less exspenve header that can be had immediately. Works as well as the SMSP header in tests that we have seen and I would then surmise as well as Hytech. I know revisions have been made but are they worth the wait and money? For some they very well may be. If you want power and ground clearance tomorrow "off the shelf" I'd say Toda is a front runner option.

I understand.

There's definitely something to be said for being able to ante up the cash and getting the header immediately, instead of having to wait several months for the next run of SMSP or HyTech.

Victor's running a Spoon header and seems tob e doing perfectly well.

You know...I sat here and thought about it...and thought about it....and thought about it and you're right about the intake thing...so...I just emailed a fellow ITRCA.com member who has a comptech icebox for sale, and I'm going to try to buy it off of him....damn you....I don't have money for this, lol.

And about the header...I know a DC won't keep up with a Toda....that's a given...my comment said that "The lowest I would go with is a DC JDM header" which means that is the cheapest one I would buy...if he wants a cheap header with good results, that's the one. If he wants to spend the extra dough, then yeah, toda or a custom.

BTW, one thing I wanna add....and this struck a chord with me...you said that the AEM is an attention getter....you are right...I get looks all the time at 8k....I'm a pretty low key guy and I like to stay under the radar...it's especially hard with an ITR...so why make it even harder? This is probably a good decision.

Thanks Trey. =)

Dont most cars get looks at 8k no matter what intake they have? I remember winding my 88 Prelude 2.0S out to 8k and it was stock, everyone looked at me when i did it too.

I believe its mostly all personal preference. If you got the $$$ and bling bling to ya.

if not, stick with what you can afford.

HP gains is so over rated these days.

does 1 or 2 more matter? can you honestly feel the extra 1-2 HP gain? I doubt it.

Research and see what is best for you and your budget.

despite all types of upgrades, tuning is the key. that is your true HP gain right there.

is the hytech catback system good to invest in if you plan on going with a turbo setup?
