Nitrous

Hello,

I have a feeling my question will cause an uproar here, but here goes... I am considering adding a 55HP Zex nitrous kit to my otherwise stock engined 98 ITR and would like to get some input from you guys.

Everyone always says don't use nitrous because it will blow up your engine, but few people really know too much about it. It seems like the only people who are knowledgeable about nitrous are those trying to sell it, so they are biased and of course say it is safe. I'd just like to get some unbiased opinions here if it is really harmful assuming it is set up properly.

I've looked into other avenues for upping the horsepower, but I can't justify their expense. For the price of adding a turbo, I'd sooner sell my car and buy a new S2000. From most dyno graphs I see, the JR supercharger only adds about 20-25 hp at the wheels unless countless hours (and $$$$) are spent tuning on the dyno. I'm not knowledgeable enough about engines to go about swithing their internals.

My goal here is to get the car up to around 210 hp at the wheels. I figure this would get me into the low 13s, enough to shake off most cars that pull up next to me on the street.

Any feedback will certainly be appreciated. :D

Thanks,
Tony Alvarez

well...as much as im a fan of all-motor.... i have to admit, n20 is a good bang-for-the-buck item.

keep in mind ANYTIME you force air into your motor, you're going to reduce its reliability. with that said:

i think a 55-shot would be ok, i wouldnt risk anything over that though. make sure you put in the right jets for the n20, my friend accidentally put 125 shot jets on his contour svt when he meant to put in 75 shot jets. needless to say he melted some pistons.

also keep make sure you have an adequate fuel system set up to take the n20, the last thing you want to do is run too lean. lean+n20=boom!

im not sure if a 55-shot would require a new fuel pump, but look into it first.

Alex B, thanks for the reply. I was under the same impression that an upgraded fuel pump may be necessary, either w/ nitrous or a supercharger. I will look into this further.

Thanks again,

People who juice blow up because of one reason- lack of tuning. Take it to a dyno, and expect to use a lot of the tank with several pulls

If you are going to put even a 55 shot your motor, i would suggest the pump, and may 330cc injectors to give the fuel.

But, I too do not have much experience with it...

On the other hand, I would NEVER boost a C5 in any way, shape or form, or any motor for that matter with 11:1 + Compression.

210hp to the wheels will probably not net low 13s, with good traction, you might break into the 13s, but more likely low 14's. Why not boost the motor (when I say boost, I mean turbo ofcourse) With nitrous, the fun stops when the laughing gas stops. With boost it's always there.

i had a zex kit in my type r. with the 55 shot with street tires i ran a 13.4...with slicks and 75 shot i ran 13.0. you can beat pretty much anything next to you..i do. i just insatlled a nitrous express kit and it's better then the zex kit.. but the zex kit does a good job

13's with 210whp

I am very impressed by the 13.0 and the 13.4 for that matter. My point was that with 210 to the wheel, I think breaking into the 13's would be a long shot.
