So let me get some votes on what you think is the best exhaust on the market for the Type R....Best meaning Sound,power,style.....price is not a factor....Thanks guys...

I think 2 of your best options for sound and power are the SMSP and Hytech custom exhausts. Both are a little exspensive. SMSP is true 2.5" though.

ALso the Buddy Club SPec exhausts are sweet and light but ear bleeding loud.

I personally want the quietest exhaust possible.

Well...you asked for it, here is my review:

John at HyTech sent me my header back and my exhaust...and I must say that the quality of the product is second to none, but the pictures will verify that to you.

Sits a little lower than I would prefer, going to correct that with installing smaller rubber hangers when I have a chance, and yes that is the incorrect Type-R sticker on the back of the car .

Dyno Testing

Car facts -
Comptech icebox and intake
Mugen headgasket(no correction to cam gears, roughly at -1.5, -1.5)
Hondata intake manifold gasket, street setup

Run#33 - Testing was done as delivered...just hoping on the dyno and seeing what the car put out.

Run#35 - Just bolted on the HyTech header and HyTech exhaust, test pipe was used.

Run#48 - tuned Hondata and cam gears, realized that the injectors were at 101% duty cycle after 1 run with the hondata, added an FPR to increase fuel, currently at ~60psi, hose on under full throttle(thanks to Michael Yun).

And the 2 things that made my day...

1. HyTech header with 18" extension(test pipe) vs HyTech with full exhaust, simply removed the b-pipe.

2. My old setup vs current...old setup had Toda B's, Toda valve springs, PowerFC, RC 440's, HyTech header, carsound cat, Comptech exhaust, Comptech icebox and intake

Summation...damn this car is fast, it pulls very hard all the way to redline, 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are accompanied with wheel spin with the Azenis...sound wise the exhaust is by far one of the quietest that I have heard...it is on similar to the Mugen, but deeper, hopefully I can get Bob aka Bob#455 on Honda-Tech to take some video of the exhaust so that I can post up what it sounds like.

The car was able to run a 13.8 1/4 mile with a burnt clutch, consistant 13.9 with a 2.2 60ft time...enough for me to win the NHRA bracket 1 races at Sears Point September 8th.

I would like to thank John at HyTech for finally shipping me the exhaust :o, and I would like to thank Lawrence and Dick at DynoSpot Racing for allowing me to use their facilities at a very discounted rate for this comparison, and Lawrence...thanks for the awesome tune, damn this is a fun car to drive again =), Mike Marsey(Rboosted) thanks for the help with the installation.

Thermal Research and Development...3"

And if you want to get a turbo get a Drag3 from importparts.com, the best prices that I have seen, and pretty good customer service.

I like the Mugen Sports Exhaust, because it's fairly quiet, and it's made for the Type-R...not running any type of Forced Induction in mind.

I got the Tanabe Super Mad. and I like it. It's loud and deep. (I have no cat with the Spoon header) once you put the silencer in you can't hear it at all. I droped .1 at the track.

WHY CHANGE YOUR EXHAUST? IT IS ALREADY 2.25IN MANDREL BENT PIPING, AND IF YOU PLAN ON STAYING ALL MOTOR, WHICH YOU SHOULD, IT IS A PERFECT SIZE. IF YOU WANT A NICER LOOKING MUFFLER GET A UNIVERSAL ONE. I RIDE WITH A JUN TITANIUM MUFFLER, IT LOOKS BAD ASS AND SOUNDS BETTER THAN ANY SYSTEM YOU CAN BUY, SURE IT COSTS THE SAME AS A FULL SUSTEM BUT IT IS WELL WORTH IT. HKS AND APEXi ALSO MAKE DESIEL UNIVERSAL MUFFLERS.

does anyone out there have experience with the spoon exhausts?

Spoon Street Axle Back: Quiet but a little bit louder than stock. Very little if any powergains. Meant for those that want something just for a little sound.

Spoon N1 Axle Back: Lightweight. Straight through design. Loud everywhere throughout the rpm. Not ideal for a daily driver. High RPM gains.

Stock exhaust is 2.25 but with a few bottlenecks that impede flow tremendously.

Please lay down on the caps.

I've heard nothing but good things about Skunk2's complete catback systems, but i wanted to get some feedback/info from a few gearheads before i shell out a bunch of money. Any word about style, sound, or performance (for the '97 ITR)

Spoon has a great Sports Exhaust for the ITR. Keep in mind "Sports Exhaust" usually implies it is for a n/a car. However, as you know n/a cars are usually much louder than f/i cars (if built properly). If the rest of you are like me, you don't want a super loud exhaust, that will put you to sleep on the freeway during those long drives. Mugen and Spoon's Sports Exhaust are both very quiet.

Is DC Sport exhaust system and headers are good? Also does anyone know where to find exhaust sounds?

JDM DC header w/ 2.5" collector is great bang for the buck. (meaning you'll notice a big gain in power.)

DC exhaust is so-so. I wouldn't put one on my car... I'd rather stick with OEM exhaust than DC. Their fit and finish on exhaust is not that great.

wait are you talking about their headers? or their cat-backs?

because i was planning on getting one of their 4 into 1 headers for my R.

DC JDM is also the version that has clearance issues and people seem to bang up pretty bad.

The 4-1 header meaning the DC (2.5" collector) version? Be sure it is JDM or it really isn't worth the money IMO. Also if your area has road issues and you think you might have clearance problems consider the OEM JDM 4-1 (It is no lower than the oil pan where the DC is). Look at the bang for the buck this way, is 2 DC JDM headers cheaper or one OEM JDM?

Just my $0.02
