Oil Consumption

I did quite a bit of searching, but couldn't find any solid answers relating to my question. Anyhow, my R got an oil change on Oct. 27th at the local Honda dealership with 47274 miles. The R was refilled with Mobil 1. I drive the car daily on my commute to work about 50 miles roundtrip. The odometer is now sitting at about 48XXX miles. Hearing all the various rumors about how Mobil 1 burns in Rs, I decided to check my oil level on Sunday night. To my horror, my oil level had been drained down to the bottom most punched out hole on the dip stick. My R doesn't leak or anything because I can't see any signs of leakage on the garage floor. The engine is clean as ever. The car drives fine and VTec engages just fine. Lastly, I don't even drive the car hard or push its limits on a daily basis. My commute is all highway with me traveling at speeds of 70-80 mph only. Is this kind of oil consumption behavior normal on the Type Rs? Does anyone have any idea on what could possibly be wrong? Thanks.

On the hiway cruising mine burns one Qt pertank
On track mine burns 1 QT persession.
On the street mine will burn about 1 Qt per day if driven hard or 1 Qt every other day.
Mine is exsessive, but always uses the same amount of oil.
And then there are ITRs that don't burn. Opie's R does not burn one drop even when he went out to Expo 5 and back.

You can try a different oil. Mine burns with mobil 1, doesn't burn a drop with GTX, etc.

did you check the dipstick prior to driving? the range of the bottom to top hole is 1 qt and you're fine as long as it's above the bottom hole, so maybe you're not experiencing as large of a loss as it seems? i'm running mobil 1 and i've filled up about a half qt or so during the past 6000miles....yeah i know i'm due.

Could just be that the dealer filled it on the low side.
I normally need to add about 1/4 qt. per month or per autox (Mobil 1) to keep it at the top hole.
2 weeks after my 75k service at the dealer, I did a pre-autox oil check and it was at the bottom hole. I assume the dealer is just saving money.

You know, I just looked at my receipt and noticed that I was charged for 5 quarts. They must have filled it 4+ quarts and charged me for the 5 because they had to use a small smount from the 5th quart. It's either this or I was screwed by being charged for 5 quarts eventhough they low filled me. Thanks for all the input. Atleast, now I know better to keep an eye on my oil level closely. I'm going to have to do a lot more reading up on the maintenance of my R.

do the oil change yourself so you know exactly what's going on, and how much oil you put in and it consumes. it will give you piece of mind, and you'll know exactly what's going on (plus you won't be overcharged).
i'm using penzoil 5w30, and change every 3000 mi. occassionally, if i've been running my car hard, i have to add more, but it's a rare occurance.
i think it has a lot to do with how you're driving your car. also, our cars rev higher quicker than our GS-R and LS bretheren. you'll notice at 80 MPH, we're up there in the 4000 RPM range, eating up more gas, and burning more oil than a GS-R running in his 3k range.

That's fine if you have the time, and the place to do it, and the tools, and you enjoy it. Not everyone does.

The difference between the GS-R and the ITR isn't that great. At 4000 RPM, the GS-R does around 80 mph, and the ITR does 75 mph. (The final drive ratio is 4.4 on both cars; fifth gear is 0.848 in the ITR, 0.787 in the GS-R.)
Perhaps you're thinking of the LS, which has a 4.266 final drive and a 0.714 fifth gear, so it's doing around 90 mph at 4000 RPM (and is turning around 3300 at 75, 3500 at 80).
