My car was STOLEN!
My car was STOLEN!
So it was my girlfriend and I's first anniversary and after a nice night out on the town, we got back at about midnight and I parked my 98' Integra Type-R right in front of her apartment. After about 20 minutes we turned off the lights in the living room (which faces out towards the street) and headed into the bedroom. After another 20 minutes I heard a noise and thought "hmm.. that sounds like MY car alarm!" By the time I got up and walked to the window, the car was just GONE!! I couldn't believe it happened sooo fast! we called the cops, but I knew I wasn't going to get my car back in one piece. After I told some of my friends the story, they pointed out the date it was stolen.. 6/6/06!
About a week later (within 5 hours, actually) the car turned up near the airport completely stripped! I'd post some pictures but I'm not sure how to.. The only funny part was that the only thing that wasn't stolen was the thing that has been ripped off 4 times before by kids.. the Red Acura emblem!
And I know that it is not unusual for a type-R to be stolen.. I just had to vent a little. And I know that there are no 100% theft proof devices out there, but what kind of anti-theft devices work the best? What do you guys use?
Thanks!

I'm really sorry for your loss.
As far as theft deterents go, everyone has their own preference. Removable steering wheels, kill switches, GPS systems, standard alarm systems, wheel boots, or removing a fuse or your battery are a few that come to mind. None of them are a 100% guarantee that your car is safe, and most people use a few different methods at once.
Best of luck,
Dawn

Thanks for the sympathy guys!
Rob (Bbasso) - I've had friends check the link without needing a password.. try checking it again? If not, if you really want to see the pics I can e-mail it to ya.. just tell me where to e-mail them.
Dawn (brokenhearted) - Thanks for the options! I'm still researching to see what I want to do.
For my next car I'm thinking of getting a Nissan 350Z and from what I hear, its a bit more exclusive of a car and the demand for stolen parts is much lower.. I guess the rationale is that people who don't have a lot of money (primarily kids) buy base honda/acuras and then get the cheaper stolen parts for them. This creates the demand.. Since the Nissan 350Z base is still much more expensive than the base honda, they aren't bought as often by kids and so the demand is lower. So hopefully a good alarm and maybe one extra backup may be enough. (got some wood I can knock on?)
Hype-R - Thanks for the sympathy man! I live in the East East Bay of California (about an hour east of SF). I parked my car in Rockridge in front of my girlfriend's apt. Rockridge is actually a nice upperscale place.. a lot of little shops, expensive restaurants, etc. but I guess this also makes it a high target for auto theft. And is also somewhat close to Oakland which definitely does not have a good reputation.
Dave B - no plans to rebuild. I'm just going to take the insurance blood money and put it towards a Nissan 350Z.
Neo_ - Aren't they though? breaks my heart every time I see them. And still amazes me how thorough they were in stripping the car.
Has anyone heard of an Anti-theft device called the Powerlock? (http://www.powerlock.com). According to them, once installed (and permanently installed) it is absolutely impossible to hotwire which is the primary way thiefs steal cars/car parts. It is supposed to encase the whole ignition line from the key ignition to the engine and once installed, is impossible to uninstall. Hmm.. makes me wonder, what happens if they mess up an installation? Are you forever stuck with a shoddy installation? And I notice that they guarantee your car will not be hotwired.. But what about being towed? Anyways, just thought I'd see what people thought..
Thanks people!

I've never heard of powerlock, but when my car was stolen, it wasn't hotwired. The door was slimjimmed, the parking brake was released, and she was pushed onto a truck. Not uncommon, actually. So don't rely on just one method.tayzzer22 wrote:Has anyone heard of an Anti-theft device called the Powerlock? (http://www.powerlock.com). As far as getting it installed, is it just that one company that installs it,because chances are the techs would be well trained and wouldn't fugg it up.
And btw, I bought my R from a Nissan dealership. The original owner sold her for a 350Z. He came back a week later and tried to buy her back, but I'd already paid well over 10,000 down. Not saying that the 350 isn't a great car (I love the Z cars), but rebuilding Teg is a good idea, too.
And one more thing. Like Dave said, if you get a chance, try and buy back her shell so that she can go to a good home and be rebuilt.
Take care,
Dawn

Sucks to hear man. It can't be easy seeing your baby torn up like that. Better luck with the 350Z!
It doesn't look like it was stripped too badly. Most still has fenders, hood, and most of the interior plastic paneling. Someone could prolly pick it up and return it to the street. Is the original suspension still there??
Would you mind posting or PMing the VIN and badge number (used to be on the center armrest)?? We're trying to create a database of those two pieces of info so whoever buys the shell in the future could find out the badge# since Honda can't or won't tell us. All too often people pickup theft recovery ITRs and are unable to figure out the badge#. Thanks a ton man. Again, sorry for you loss.

Get a Clifford Alarm... Not 100% but will definitely get those stupid kids that like to Play gone in 60 sec...
Proximity Sensor and Wireless Siren two of my favorite Features Not to mention the Wireless Kill switches... AWESOME TEchnology... But certainly on the High end of the Alarm $$ wise.
