how do you do a compression test to check for vacuum leak?

if i have a leak in my vacuum line, will it affect the way my car idle?

everytime i do a cold start, my engine idles horribly from 500rpm to 2500rpm back and forth. but once the engine is warmed up, it works just fine idling is smooth. im only running 4lbs of boost with my jrsc with stock timing set at 16. weird thing is that every time i hit boost, i can hear detonation. would hondata help me solved the problem? i retard my timing to 10 which removes the detonation noises but my car performance lags very bad.

A leak down test will show if your valve seals are bad for the most part!

As for hearing detonation...

What octane fuel are you using? Try stepping it up, or if you cannot buy better octane try a booster real quick and see if that changes anything.

New plugs(Tune up) maybe could help for the fact you could be getting one really crappy flame front within the combustion chamber too!

im using 91 ocatane here in CA from shell and cheveron. im currently using one step colder spark plug BKR7E-11 instead of BKR6E-11 not sure if it'll help. i did try octane 100 from shell for 6.99 a gallon but notice no different. i still hear the detonation every time i reach boost. will fuel management like hondata help clear up the problem?

Yes tuning will help just about any problem!

change your TPS sensor, I've seen the same cold start idle problem come out of many tegs before.

tps sensor??

The IAC or Idle Air Control can cause surging in the rpms at idle as can a faulty TPS or Throttle Position Sensor. My first suggestion would be to take the IAC out and douse it in some carb cleaner of sorts. Clean it as much as you can and replace and see if your surging is gone.
