I know convincing someone to sell their Type R isn't easy. I just so happen to know there is a 98 Type R within about 2 miles from me that has been babied and garaged its whole life. I find out about it back in 2001 when a friend was helping me put coilovers on a car I had and he said his neighbor down the street has a cheery 98 R. I hadn't thought about it much in the last few years but with my grown interest in the cars I thought I might pursue it. Back in 2001 I heard he wouldn't sell it...maybe he would now? I believe it to have under 30k miles on it. Other than that I know very little. Only know where its at...don't even know the owner. I have a 98 R brochure and I thought I could go over there and start conversating with him...maybe offering to give him the brochure if he let me see the car. ANYWAYS......HOW WOULD YOU GO UP TO SOMEONE WITH A TYPE R KNOWING YOU WANT IT BUT THEY DON'T WANT TO SELL IT? Its so damn close...I MUST try!

Him knowing you want the car so bad will only do one thing, make his eyes glow. The ball would be 100% in his court. He could name any price in the book...and it would probably make you think "this guys a fool!"

So heres what I would do. Considering hes a neighbor somewhat...i'd go over there and introduce yourself, or if you see him outside on your way home from work or something, stop and introduce yourself. Just tell him you admire his car, you've always been an R fan, just never had the $$...etc, make short talk, etc. and go home. Then a few days later stop in again...tell him you've been saving your pennies and wanting to buy one, you've been looking online for one, etc and see if he knows anyone who would want to sell one...within xxx miles radius.

This would do a few things.
1, if he does want to give up his R, he will let you know, right then and there.

2, If he does have any doubt in his mind that he would consider selling his R, that would trigger his light bulb, you'd probably be the first person to know about it.

3. Who knows, maybe he knows someone within your region that has one jut as nice for sale...and that could work in your favor also!

I dont think I would walk up to his house and say "hey, you wanna sell your car" -though ive done it myself (with classic cars, not R's), I dont think it would be a good idea considering all of the BS (theft) that goes with havin an R.

If your really serious about getting an R, my advice would be to hold out until the perfect one comes around. A plane ticket to a place that would be about a day or two drive isnt but a few hundred bucks, have the seller pick you up at the airport and drive a caR home...there are plenty out there for sale. Just gotta find them.

thanks guys. I just figured he's soooo close that it is worth a try since a 98 is what I really want the most.

I found out the car has something crazy like under 15k miles. I guess he won't sell it. Not even to his old son. Guy is in his 60s and use to work for Honda supposedly. My buddy said he MIGHT take $20k. Seems nuts for a car I want to drive everyday and that is already 10 years old!

Age means nothing. Mileage and condition mean everything. $20k for a '98 with under 15k miles is very plausible, assuming the caR is minty.

That's awesome. It's rare to find an old guy that can respect a japanese import 4-banger. Props to him, and hope he keeps it for a long time.

Agreed, its just too bad he's not in my family lol.

My advice... show up with the top amount you can afford and ask if he would sell it for that, then show him the money! if he passes out be sure to call 911 if he takes the cash grab the keys. asking w/o money in hand is pointless.

If somebody I didn't know came to my house asking about my R I'd probably not be too friendly.... maybe a touch on the pissed off side.

agreed, i'd drop 20k for a super fresh 98
