Should I buy a Type-R???

This is my first post on here…

I’m very seriously considering getting an integra Type- R. I do have a few questions for you guys though.

1.Do you guys find it hard to park without some clown messing with it or worrying about it all day?

2.Do you guys feel you get messed with by the cops more?

3.What do you guys think about the wing? I’m not sure I like it. I think I might like the no wing/spoiler look.

4.What year is the best, as far as horse power etc…?

5.Anything I should know or think about before I buy one?

6.What’s a good price and should I get one on eBay?

I used to race way back in the day. Before it was so popular with Hondas. I started way back in high school. I had a 1990 CRX with an LS motor transplant. The CRX was from a junkyard and was completely stripped. It was so ugly we called it the quarter mile pile. I miss the good old days and I want to do it right this time. Any input would be much appreciated!

i drive my type r daily and never even get second looks from the cops, but yes everytime i leave it somewhere i do worry about it until i get out and see it again. but that goes to say with any car just this one a little more than another

Well now....All years have the same stock horsepower (99% sure). The ITR spoiler actually helps, it's not just for looks, it has a purpose. Plus it is a trait of the Type R. An important thing to do, IMO, would be to make sure it's authentic before you buy one. Ask for the vin number and look it up. If you see one for sale, grab it before it's too late. I don't think you'll regret it even if you have to rebuild it man.

Thanks guys, I used to be in the street-racing scene here in southern California (Huntington Beach, Carson, Long Beach Etc). Back then my CRX was one of the fastest cars. It got to the point where I couldn’t get any one to race for money anymore. I was one of the first guys to transplant an Integra LS motor to a 1990 CRX. We pulled the motor out and used my friend’s dads welding tools to move the front motor mount so the 1.8 Ls would fit. I also had to move the battery to the back because it wouldn’t fit. Over all the car was really solid as far as the motor goes. However the fenders, hood and bumpers where all different colors (I didn’t care, I got if from the junkyard as a theft recovery). I have a few pictures of it if you want to see it. Anyway it was all business. No radio, stripped to the bone, one seat, fiber glass hood, etc...

Now that I'm older I miss the good old days. I'm not going to go to the street races anymore. God knows how many times I have been thrown in the back of a police car or had the ghetto bird chasing me. But its all good, that was then and this is now.

I miss it though. That’s why I want to get a type R. I could never afford it then but I can now, and I'm seriously considering buying one.

My main concerns are the po po's and gettin jacked. I'm glad I found this site and I can’t wait to join the Type R crew. Any other advice would be great. Thanks...

I see your in Cali...

So let me start with this... if your worried about theft... you should be especially in SoCal. People new to the R's aren't as familiar with this and far to many times I see new guys buy an ITR only to have it stolen within the month of ownership.

DO NOT BUY if you don't have a garage.

DO NOT BUY if the car will be your DD.

All years have same WHP (cams are a little different in 00-01)

Spoiler is fully functional, but back to my first comment... i see your in Cali.

If you want the race feeling, without the worry of cops and such... I suggest you move up to organized racing events or track days. I see you mention drag racing. Don't expect to be very competative with an ITR for drag racing. However if you'd be interested in some AutoX or HPDE (road courses) then the ITR is fit at home, and in stock form.

Dave_B does a good job summing things up. A few things I would reiterate are not to buy one if you can not garage it ALL times and not if it needs to be your daily driver. If you don't have another car to use for mall trips, movies and general unattended times then wait on getting one. Also, if your looking for a "drag car" the ITR isn't it. Other than that, it's a very enjoyable car to drive and if you are responsible when you are doing so there shouldn't be any hassle from the cops.

I have a garage I can park it in as well as a parking space next to my front door. I live in a town house so the garage is around the corner from my front door. I also have my wife’s car that we can drive to places like the movies. But do people really follow you home? I really want one but man WTF...

It’s a shame in life you can’t get the things you want because some clown wants to jack your stuff.

The car will pretty much be a daily driver. I would try to park it only at work and other places that are safe. (I have a window outside of my office that I park my 06 Chevy avalanche in now). So it would be totally safe at work.

Man I heard it was bad but I had no idea it was that bad. And the thing is my other option was to do a turbo GSR but that would be just as bad.

SoCal and Chicago are the worst. Yes, people will actually follow you home (they try to be stealthy, but anyone can figure out they are being followed by going completely circle around a city block and still see those headlights behind you)

Garage is the ONLY place I would let the car sleep at night. blocked and that doesn't really help. hell, people have had their garages broken into to get to the car.

Theft and ITR's go hand in hand. Yes, it's that bad. We are all only telling you so that your not a number like the rest before you.

That line about being a DD in SoCal sums up my thoughts. While it's a nice car to have and enjoy, the Insurance Company experience is not... They'll want to give you 10k for a car you just bought for 18k. Just because you have a window next to you and your car parked where you can see it is no guarentee... you don't stare out that window all day long looking at it. At some point you have lunch/bathroom and that's really all it takes to nab one.

I'm not sure if theives out there really target ITR's more than GS-R's... but here in FL they'll grab either one. DC2's just really do get stolen that much. It's sad, but there's a reason i don't DD mine anymore.

Ive had mine for a month almost now or so and its a DD, i TRY not to worry about the idea of it getting stolen alot, so i dont worry as much but yeh, I live in Oklahoma anyways so its probally not too bad like Cali or something.

But if you do end up getting the itr, just think the car is over 10 years old, AND its still not stolen yet so what are the chances of it getting stolen in your hands and not the previous owners haha. Dave does bring up scary and REAL facts about owning one though :/

It really bothers me that people follow you home. I’m a black belt 2nd degree and I’ve also been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for 2 years. But none of that will matter if they have a gun or a knife.

It really is a disappointment. And frankly, it's sad that these kids won't get jobs and buy what they want. But that's just the way it is these days.

While they have, do and will continue to follow ITR's home (or just run the plate/VIN and find out through the DMV where the car is registered to) you still can't defend a car sadly. I understand your point, but unless someone is reaching in your car at YOU, you can't do anything about it. Especially with laws in California.

What I would suggest if I were you, is save the $$$ an ITR costs, and get an RS (no sunroof, lighter of the models) and then swap a JDM ITR motor in it. That's pretty close (not exact, but yet still a fun car)

That alone is a no-no. At some point you will be out of touch with the caR and you will come back to an empty space. Since you do have a garage, go ahead and get an ITR as a pleasure only car. You can take heR out and have fun all you want and not have to worry about public parking. Don't make heR your primary workhorse.

I agree with all of these statements. I have been DDing my ITR for about 3 years now and I always worry that I am going to come back to a blank parking spot. Theft rates are horrible here outside of Seattle. When I come home from meets or auto-X events I always watch for being tailed. I will also vouch for the garage only sentiment. I don't think I would have owned my car for as long as I have if it weren't garaged.

As for going to the movies or a bar I don't even think about taking it out. Either I call a cab or take my Del slow. I don't get harassed by the cops at all though. The two times I have been pulled over have been legitimate (both barely 5 over... if that's legit) and I got off with warnings.

So I say if you have the garage space and have ITR love just buy one... and watch your heart skip a beat when you forget where you parked(jk.... but seriously).

If I do go the RS JDM Type-R transplant route. Are the JDM motors legal (Smog & otherwise) in CA?

If you build a good enough clone, it will suffer the same fate as the actual. Not to mention it will probably cost more in the long run.
