Check Engine P1457 on my ITR

Post by MotorChan »

My 2000 ITR recently start to have check engine light with code P1457 EVAP Leak.

I went to the dealership last friday to check it out. They did some tests and said that the EVAP Bypass Solenoid is the problem. They even told me that there is an Acura Service Bulletin (03-001) existed regarding this problem. They quote me $300 to replace the EVAP Bypass Solenoid. Since they didn't have the part in stock, I have to wait.

However, it is interesting that whenever we reset the light, I drove the car for days and the light never come back. As soon as my wife took the car out, the check light came back. The difference between my driving and her driving was that she likes to crank up the AC (air Cond) when driving. So, we did an experiment last week where my wife spent the whole week with the car without using the AC, the car survived the whole week without the check light coming back.

It seems the problem is related to the AC. I noticed that when AC was used and when the ITR is parked in garage, there were quite some water dripping to the floor and that looks quite rusty.

I wonder some water from the AC might somehow got trapped under the car and corroded some wires that might have caused a short to the EVAP system and kick up the check engine light..

Does that make sense to you? Any idea where I should check?

Bottom line: I'm worry that even I replace the Bypass Solenoid, it still won't fix the problem.

I've been throwing the same code since I bought my 98 last Nov. The EVAP diagnostics cycle takes the most time/mileage of any of the systems diagnostics. It usually takes 400-600 miles for the cycle to complete and throw a code. I never use the AC so don't know how much that adds to the equation. For now I just keep resetting the code when it pops :P

EVAP bypass solenoid, huh?
Which would that be, did they show you? Give a part #?

If it's cheap enough for the part...might give that a try myself.

I have no idea where exactly it is, I'm guess it is at the bottom of our car.

You can search for the Acura Service bulletin b03-001

interesting that this should come up now. my evap canister fell off it's mount @ my last event, hanging around in the engine bay until i went to check my oil at the end of the day. threw p1457 the next day. went to see my mechanic, he reset the code. it came back the next day. of special note: the purge control valve was "ticking" after the code reset, but hasn't ticked since the code came back. we're going to do an evap system test tomorrow, to see what's causing the problem. my guess is that the problem is related to the canister or one of the valves/hoses connected to it, given it's brief freedom to move/smash around. stay tuned. in any case, at least it isn't something of real significance - just emissions related. crappy if you live in a state that requires periodic tests though.

Oddly enough, and probably not the issue... but if the gas cap is not tight, it too can cause this same code.

loose gas cap is P1456 from what I heard, not P1457.

Could be... could be any of the EVAP codes.

On mine, I had to replace the valve itself, after charcoal testing.

Well, went back to dealership; and this time, they said it is the "Vent Shut Solenoid" instead.

Cost $270 to replace it, hopefully that's it.

Cap is $14, so its never a bad idea to change it. I'm not familiar with the vent shut solenoid but many of those EVAP related pieces are pricey. My last car was through cell 45's (too lean) and it ended up being the purge control solenoid ($135 piece). I hope this most recent investment solves your issues.

so we found the problem..

Image

looks like it rubbed on the axle and dumped all the charcoal out when it came unhinged.
should have done the visual inspection FIRST, before we did a test of the whole evap system
went to the junkyard, found a canister from a '98 GSR, light is gone. for anybody else that throws p1457, check that canister for damage if it came unhinged!!

I was going to say, let me know what you do exactly find the problem to be as I have my whole EVAP system out of my car and the pieces are just laying around.

Glad to hear it's fixed and working.
