Drove the ITR a couple miles today (battery was completely DEAD).

Canceled Hampton and Holiday Inn reservations as well, will try camping.

Zyg any particular reason you are camping now? Only curious as it is going to be July and the heat could be rather brutal that time of year.

Camping ....

Post by zygspeed »

I'm just looking forward to waking up at the track.
Guess I spoiled myself staying at the VIR lodge for E7, and in one of the paddock suites for E8.

Recently picked up an e-z up type canopy and a couple of those folding chairs from Summit Racing.
Should really see where my old tent went to ... :D

Not trying to bug you, Jay, but is there a way for any of us to specifically request a reprinting of the e9 tee shirt -- to be printed at the same time as the e10 shirts? Still dyin' to have one! :)

I'm working on it. The hold-up is the same across the board for a few things. It's frustrating...still. That is my goal though, to have E9 shirts available as well as E10.

Last night I dreamed we were at Expo, I was in R-box, in the tech line, and Jay was walking by and I asked him about shirts, and he said we had them for e10 and e9! And then I made a girly squeal of excitement, hahaha! :D

Hi guys,
I wanted to see if you guys thought my setup was okay for expo:
-OMP FIA and Hans approved seat for driver
-Schroth rallye 3 asm DOT approved (street legal) harness for driver
-Stock seat for instructor
-Stock seatbelt for instructor
-No rollbar or rollcage
The Schroth harness will be attached using stock seatbelt mounting points including the rear drivers side seatbelt mounting point. I ran with this same setup for expo 9 and wmhm 9. I also recently joined NASA and according to thier CCR and checking on the nasamidwest forums, this setup is approved for HPDE. I know that the instructors should have the same setup as the driver, but atleast from the instructor's perspective everything is stock for him/her.

In previous years, it has been required that driver and instructor have equal protection/equipment. I'm not sure how the commitee feels of this now, so I will wait for their final word.

From----> http://www.itrexpo.com/rules.php

"Seatbelts and Harnesses:
Seatbelts must be in new or perfect condition. No damage may be present, and they must be factory configuration. Any harness system must be of an approved design, and can be used only in conjunction with approved rollover protection. Driver and passenger should have the identical restraint system."

The OMP seat would not be ok without rollover protection. The harness is...sort of not ok either, for the same reason. That is actually also not ok by NASA CCR standards for the same reason.

I think it is fine for NASA, but I was just using that as a reference:
http://www.nasaforums.com/viewtopic.php ... &sk=t&sd=a
11.4.8 Seatbelts and Harnesses
The seatbelts should be in good condition. No damage may be present on the seatbelts
and they must be the factory configuration. Any harness or any restraint system, other
than factory stock, shall conform to CCR section #15.5, in all respects* except for the
expiration regulations. Harnesses that are expired for racing may be used providing that
they are in at least very good condition. The use of a lap belt without any shoulder
restraint is not permitted. Passenger seatbelts must meet the same minimum
requirements per the CCR as the driver seatbelts if being used by a passenger. Notepassenger
equipment need not match the installed equipment on the driver’s side.
*Aftermarket DOT-certified belt sets, installed to the manufacturer’s specifications may
be allowed. Proof of DOT certification and proper installation is the driver’s
responsibility.

11.4.12 Seats
All seats must be securely fastened to the structure of the car such that they are strong
enough to withstand a major impact. If replaced, the replacement seat should be
installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
If stock seats are to be used with a roll bar/cage, care should be taken to prevent the
seat from submarining under the rollbar. Care should also be taken to prevent the
occupant from hitting his/her head on the roll bar/cage.
Passenger seats must meet the same requirements, per the CCR, as the driver seat, if
used by passengers. Note- The passenger seat does not have to match the driver’s
seat.

I read that as they must meet the same requirement as the driver belts. That means if you have harnesses on one side you need harnesses on the other. stock belts on one side....stock belts on the other side. That's the standard for nearly all groups running DEs currently. Same goes for seats. Also fixed back seats are not safe without additional rollover protection.

Damn that CCR... I swear the old one was written better. By the current rules, you are correct whoami. I personally think its a terrible idea, but as long as you are not forcing that same situation on the instructor, so be it. Just be aware of the risk you're putting yourself in on a number of levels.

<--- Thinks its really f'ing stupid to cheap out on safety gear, even if it is legal by the word of the rulebook. Its called "bare minimum" for a reason.

All that being said, I don't know what the official Expo stance is. We were discussing it at one point, and I think Jay got busy with other stuff.

I think there are some items to pay attention to. Those rules very clearly say may be allowed. That means you are up to the discretion of the tech inspectors and the instructor's approval. So even if you pass tech inspection your setup still needs to meet your instructor's approval. If he or she doesn't feel safe you arn't going out on track.

If I'm dropping $360 and driving 8+ hours for an event, I want to be sure there isn't any chance of me not passing.

And like Adam said, I don't think safety is an item to cheap out on.

All of those are good points. People need to remember, there have been a few deaths at HPDE's the past year. Instructors are putting their lives in the hands of the students and IMO, it is the students responsiblity, not only to their instructor but to themselves to provide adequate and SMART protection.

A couple of items:
- We plan to limit the total number of attendees (drivers/guests/instructors/sponsors/etc) to 200. When we open guest registration it will be on a first come first serve basis, and we will close registration for everything at the 200 mark.

- We will be able to take a couple more Novice/Intermediate students and we still have plenty of room for the Advanced group. If you are interested in a Nov or Int spot and are ready to pay, send me an email at wmoore@oppd.com to be added to the wait list.
