JDM 96-spec rear brakes upgrade to USDM/98-spec size help

Post by cheezthis »

UPDATE: All the info needed is on this page. However, I'm leaving the original post that started this below.
.....
I've searched, found some information, and it has not yielded the proper result yet. Here's the problem...

- 4x114.3 JDM 96-spec rears
- want to convert it to 98-spec/USDM ITR size in the rear with the 14s rear calipers
- what bracket is needed to do this?
- I have a Prelude rear rotor that seems to be the right size

I know that 98+ ITRs had a different rear caliper bracket than the 97 ITR. I believe I have what is considered to be a 98 ITR bracket, and the bolt spacing to the hub is not correct.

Does anyone have any measurements of a 97 ITR rear caliper bracket?

Or...does anyone know for sure what works?

PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR PICS, THANKS!

I am doing the same for my project car.

I am using 96 ITR rear trailing arms with the hub/bearings, brake rotors, calipers, and brackets all coming from an RSX.

I also have 5G prelude parts on the that I bought that I found I couldn't use on my previous project car because the Prelude caliper brackets bolt pattern was very different that the spacing on the Integra trailing arms. For that car, I did not have ITR rear trailing arms. I found that the the stub shaft was too short to safely accommodate the 5 bolt rear hub/bearing, so I did not end up using the parts. It seems that all of the Prelude parts are similar to the RSX parts except for the caliper brackets.

I started with a 2000 Integra LS and I converted it to 10.3" rear rotors.

I bought the rear calipers from a 2001 Prelude. Yeah, the bleeder is upside down, but the e-brake connection is right.

I bought the (4 x 100) rotors for a 2003 civic si. I see that the Op has found another size (4 x 114.3) rotors.

I bought the rear brackets for a 2004 RSX non-type s.

A couple of years later, after I bought my
2006 Civic EX sedan and my
2008 Civic SI Sedan, I noticed that their rear caliper brackets were the same size as the ones that I used from the 2004 RSX non-type S. My Civics use the rear 14 calipers.

Ok, here we go, pictures of the rear brake situation...

The old rotor vs new rotor (4G Prelude)

Image

Original 96-spec ITR bracket, 10cm spacing between bolts (hub)

Image

Same 96-spec ITR bracket, 11 cm spacing for caliper bolts

Image

Different bracket I have, supposed to be from an Accord V6. Uses same rear caliper as USDM ITR/98-spec, not sure if bracket is same.

Image

Bolt spacing (hub) for said bracket, roughly 85mm

Image

Original 96-spec rear caliper 13S stamp

Image

Larger 14s rear caliper, USDM ITR, V6 Accord, Prelude, etc.

Image

Both calipers have the same bolt spacing.

I need to find a caliper bracket that will allow me to use the larger calipers and rotors with the proper 10 cm spacing for the hub instead of 8.5 cm.
......

Front 96-spec upgrades (just for reference here)

Image

4G Prelude VTEC rotor, NSX calipers, 25T brackets instead of 23T. No washers needed, but might have some clearance issues with some wheels (3 mm spacer might be required).

Clears....

Thanks! Not done yet though, still need to find a bracket to make the rears work.

This is all new to me too, nobody over here with '96 spec ITRs bother with the rear brakes, they change the fronts to '98 spec and leave the rears be.

Yeah, thought about it, but...

- would throw off the balance between the front and rear slightly/bias
- really difficult to find replacement rotors in the 96-spec size

So, I'd like to keep it easier to work with and better balance. :) Thanks for giving it a thought though.
...
I need to find another bracket to test. It's possibly the Accord and ITR are not the same bracket.

93 Accord rear rotor specs (according to NAPA)
# of Bolt Holes : 4
Bolt Circle Diameter : 4.5"
Brake Rotor Diameter : 10.22"
Brake Rotor Discard Thickness : .32"
Brake Rotor Thickness New : .39"
Brake Rotor Type : Disc Brake Rotor Only
Center Hole Diameter : 2.53"
Height : 1.91"
Maximum Lateral Runout : .002"

Prelude rear rotor specs
# of Bolt Holes : 4
Bolt Circle Diameter : 4.5"
Brake Rotor Diameter : 10.21"
Brake Rotor Discard Thickness : .32"
Brake Rotor Thickness New : .39"
Brake Rotor Type : Disc Brake Rotor Only-High Performance
Center Hole Diameter : 2.53"
Height : 1.69"
Maximum Lateral Runout : .002"

...

Only real difference is height. That would bring the Accord rotor inside a bit more than the Prelude rotor, which makes some sense. Even though the above bracket I have is the wrong bolt spacing, it definitely accommodates a rotor that would be more inward.

Just sharing some more info...might pick up one of these rotors to compare.

See if you can find the specifications for rear discs for Civic chassis code MB6.

That had 4x114.3 also and I *think* the same diameter as 98+ ITR.

Number of studs: 4

Disc Diameter: 260mm
Disc Height: 49mm
Disc Thickness (new): 10mm
Minimum Disc Thickness: 9mm

Yup. Civic MB6 rear discs are 4x114.3 and the same size as 98+ ITR rears. God damnit I'm good.

Per the other thread on honda-tech where I received the info on the Accord rotor...

Prelude Rotor on left, 93 Accord Rotor on right. The diameter is the same. I can take a better picture, but they lined up identically on almost every dimension.
Image

However, the hat height was different, as can be seen in this image.

Just a little info on '98 USDM ITR rear brackets.

Here's 309's passenger rear bracket. Has "7LK" stamped on it....couldn't see that without removing bracket from RTA.

Image

That distance measured there actually seemed like 97mm center to center. I used that wood ruler from the 10mm mark as well as some digital calipers. The distance from center to center on the caliper side was 110mm. No pics of that because camera battery died after above pic.

That sounds like it will work. I had a crappy tape measure when I did mine, but it all makes sense to me. Maybe I'll order those in the next day or so.

Thanks for posting that up, Joe!

I did not take any photos, but all of these measurements are from the center of one bolt hole, to the center of the next bolt hole.

The rear caliper bracket on these 3 cars are the same: 2001 Integra Type R, 2004 RSX non-type S, 2006 Civic EX Sedan.

Their holes are spaced as follows:

The holes that attach to the bracklet to the hub are 10cm apart
The holes that attach the 14 caliper to the bracket are 11cm apart.

Take your tape measure to a junk yard that has a 06 - 07 Civic Ex Sedan.

Ok, thanks to many people here and on honda-tech (higheroller54 included), as well as Willard for donating the Accord V6 calipers for test fitment and Joe/Doespike for the measurements off of his 98 ITR...

96-spec ITR rear brake upgrade to 98-spec/USDM rear brake specs:
- 98 ITR rear caliper/bracket
- 93 Accord rear rotor

It will all bolt up from there, no machining or spacing needed.

Rear calipers, boxed, with part numbers.
Image

~10mm bolt spacing for hub
Image

All bolts up and clears perfectly. e-brake cable fits, brake line fits (although it's somewhat tight, stainless lines could solve that)
Image

All fastened up, looks good
Image

96-spec ITR wheels clear without any issues

I looked those 1998 -2001 ITR part numbers up:

right side rear caliper w/bracket 43018-S03-Z03 = $169.61 new
left side rear caliper w/bracket 43019-s03-z03 = $169.61 new

The e-brake cable (on the 2001 prelude calipers that I used on my 2000 LS) was, also, about 1/4" too short. I removed its closest (support) clip and it was able to reach.

My e-brake cable reached. If need anymore slack, I'll adjust it by the e-brake handle if there's room to do so. Swapping that e-brake cable bracket is a pain though, ha.
