are oil coolers worth it?
are oil coolers worth it?
just wondering what everyones opinions were on oil coolers....everyone knows how much R's hate heat and the difference between night and day driving is, well, night and day....i've heard of lots of different ways of cooling your motor, but i don't think i've ever heard anyone say they have an oil cooler, just wondering if there was any particular reason not to get one
Re: are oil coolers worth it?
Your R already has one! Aluminum oil cooler maintains optimum engine-oil temperature. You can improve upon the factory install but not worth the money for the minimal benefit..IMHO

Re: are oil coolers worth it?
Depends on your needs.
Organic oil likes 230F and below,
Synthetics survive until about 270F.
My boosted R has hit 220F in city driving, and has never exceeded 220F at the dragstrip, even after a dozen runs.
You don't want to overcool the oil either. Invest in an oil temp gauge, so you will at least know if you even need the additional cooler.

In most cases you don't need a real oil cooler (the stock one is a POS imo, but better than nothing). On a roadrace car I'd use one and on a boosted car I'd use one.Jiggles wrote:just wondering what everyones opinions were on oil coolers....everyone knows how much R's hate heat and the difference between night and day driving is, well, night and day....i've heard of lots of different ways of cooling your motor, but i don't think i've ever heard anyone say they have an oil cooler, just wondering if there was any particular reason not to get one
