Excess black smoke coming from the exhaust?

i have an ass of black smoke coming from the exhaust when i get into high rpms.....is this a bad thing.....and what could the problem be......i don't think im burning up oil.....any suggestions/answers would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

Depends on how much youre actually puffing out. It's normal to let out a little, more then you might think. Often bad pistons rings can cause blow by, and you can get a bit too much smoke coming out, another thing could be a bad head gasket, that just hasn't completely given out. To be totaly honest, if you can't see it while your driving, it ussualy isn't a problem, but if you can see it in your rearview, then you shouldn't even be driving it. How old is your car, and is it still under warranty???????

Probably running rich...that could mean a lot of things though.

Sounds like running rich to me.

I've seen guys with upgrade ECU's do the black smoke thing.

But all the other diagnoses could be right. Hard to fix on the internet.

Is the car stock?????

it is a 2000 yellow type r....with 43,000 miles and i use the mobile 1 tri-synthetic...... the only mods i have thus far is an AEM CAI and an exedy stage 1 clutch.....does that help..? and yes i am still under warranty

yeah, the same thing happens to me, i have a 01 R 25k and basic bolt ons. whenever i shift outta hight rpms it lets out a nice big cloud. i know there could be a few things goin on. How would you guys recommend determining what it is. i already ran a compression test and it showed up perfect. so what other methods could be used.
