Wondering if anyone could help me out with this problem...
Lately my 98 itr has this really loud rattle/grinding noise when the rpm hovers right around 1700-1800 (everywhere else is fine). Just to clarify on the sound ... to me it seems like something is loose and it's rattling/vibrating to make that noise. At first I thought it was the transmission but I've had zero problem's so far and it's ONLY between 1700-1800rpm's.
The shop I took it to told me that it was the heat shield vibrating. I had this sound before and took off the cat heat shield ... sounds disappeared for about a month and now its back. So I'm thinking that the shop might be right.
Are there any issues with taking off the header "heat shield" ie parts melting/being destroyed?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Rattiling problem ... heat shield?
Well I dont think it's my cat heat shield since I no longer have a cat replaced it with a t1r 70r exhaust + test pipe.
I actually took the car in and had the mechanic tighten all the bolts for the heatshield for the header but it's still making the noise.
Jackson...I didn't know there was a o2 sensor on the header but if this piece is in fact loose, is it just a matter of taking the heat shield off and tightening this piece? Or do I have to buy a new header?
Please help...this sound is driving me NUTS!!

there are still heatshields where your exhaust/cat are bolted to the underside of the floorpan when you remove them
this is the underside of my R when we were fitting the de-cat and RM-01A. you can see the heatshields, including where it widens for the cat
cheezthis:- Last year was much calmer compared to previous years.
