D40x vs Rebel XTi?

Post by splat »

I really like the Canon point n' shoots, but enjoyed the way my brother's D40 handles. Both are about the same price with the 18-55mm kit lenses.

Thoughts? Got a little bit of cash burning a hole in my pocket.

Canon. Better/cheaper lens selection. Better ISO performance. The anti-dust sensor (not sure if the Nikon has this or not).

Plus Canon people are way cooler than Nikon people. In all seriousness though, you'd be happy with either. Due to the stuff mentioned above, I'd go with the XTi.

The only clear-cut differences I saw were that the Nikon cannot drive the autofocus on lenses, and the Canon has the anti-dust thing.

Do other manufacturers make motorized lenses for Nikons, or would I be limited to only Nikkor stuff?

If you look through most of (or all) the pages of the in depth reviews on DP Review you should be able to figure out pretty easily which one suits you. It really comes down to lens selection. The ISO performance difference is pretty substantial in favoring the Canon (this is very important). That and the other things I mentioned above make the choice pretty clear, leaving the rest of the decision up to feel and which menu style you like. Both are easy to learn.

Erik, I spent a lot of time on dpreview when I bought my last point n' shoot, and used it to settle on a Canon SD450. I browsed through the D40x and XTi reviews, but damn, that's a LOT of information to take in. The sandbox thread Rob linked has a few Canon fans, including a couple of guys who make their living off digital photography. Right now I want to say the XTi is in the lead.

But hell, I may end up buying guns instead, so we'll see

if someone were to be a complete noob with camera's, and all he's ever done is use his cell-phone for pics (an example here: http://tartje.bulletpain.com/My%20Integ ... 007268.jpg )

what would be the sort of price range i'm looking at for a good quality starter camera and lenses and stuff, and what would i realistically be looking at?

fortunately i'm not one of those people that when they start a hobby, go out and immediately buy the most expensive thing i can, regardless of my abilities

It's a less expensive "racer gun".
It's kinda like the diff between a base HF 'teggy and a Type-R (perf. & price.)

Prices are edging under $600 for the D40x and XTi with the 18-55mm kit lens. To me, that's amazing. I paid almost that for my old Sony "pro-sumer" camera (lots of manual features, but no lenses). Erik can help, but I would say those are about entry-level for someone who's looking at a DSLR.

Willard shared some links with me of some zoom lenses in the 200mm range for $250-ish.

Nikon has the 18-200MM lens, which is an amazing lens for practically any general use. A UWA would be a good second lens if you shoot wide angle.

Personally, for the shooting I like to do (track/action stuff), I wouldn't leave Canon. Now if only I could justify the stupid money the 70-200 f2.8 cost.. :P

The f4 is more than worth it for half the price. WIth that said though, I'm in the same boat on that lens.

While the F4 is also a great lens, I'd rather just eat soup and ramen noodles for twice as long and buy the f2.8 :P
